How many decibels is a Predator generator?
A Predator generator lists 56 to 78.5 dBA on Harbor Freight's pages, from the 3500 Watt Super Quiet inverter at the bottom to the 13,000 Watt tri fuel model at the top. Frame type moves the number more than wattage does.
The Super Quiet inverters list 56 to 67. The two open frame inverters list 64.6 and 75.1. The conventional models, which Harbor Freight calls gas powered portable generators, list 70.9 to 78.5.
Every page puts its figure in a row called "Sound Rating", but the unit appears four ways across the pages: dBA, dB(A), dB and "dB(a)". We kept each as printed. Honda and Champion state their conditions differently from Harbor Freight, so we do not line their numbers up against these.
What does Harbor Freight's Sound Rating measure?
Harbor Freight's Sound Rating is an A-weighted reading that the owner's manuals, for most Predators, tie to 23 feet and a 25% load. The product pages often leave both out, so the manual is where the condition lives.
The manual for the 2500 Watt Super Quiet reads "Sound Level @23 feet, 25% load 58 dB(A)", and the page for the same model prints "58 dBA @ 25% load". Older pages such as the 3500 Watt and 9500 Watt drop the load and show the number alone.
The pages also say each Predator complies with the ANSI/PGMA G300 standard, the 2500 naming the 2023 edition. Harbor Freight does not spell out what that standard requires for sound, and we have not described it here.
Conventional Predators are harder to read. The 5000 Watt and 10,000 Watt pages name a 50% load but no distance, the 13,000 Watt manual gives 23 feet at 50% load, and the 1800, 4375, 6500 and 9000 Watt pages give a bare figure that their manuals never repeat.
How loud are Predator Super Quiet inverters?
Predator Super Quiet inverters list 56 to 67 dBA, and every one with a manual we could open gives 23 feet and 25% load. On those like for like figures, the 3500 Watt is lowest and the 9500 Watt highest.
- 56 dBA on the page, 56 or 57 dB(A) by manual revision: 3500 Watt, item 71358 (CARB 72899).
- 58 dBA: 2000 Watt, item 71343 (also sold as 59135; CARB 72891), and 2500 Watt, item 72010 (California 73422).
- 59.8 dB(A), no condition given: 4200 Watt dual fuel, item 71203.
- 61 dB(A) at 25% load: 5000 Watt dual fuel EFI, item 71424, California compliant.
- 61.7 dBA on the page, 60.5 or 61.7 dB(A) by manual revision: 5000 Watt dual fuel, item 71367 (CARB 72872).
- 64.5 dBA at 25% load: 11,500 Watt tri fuel, item 72614 (CARB 73257).
- 67 dBA: 9500 Watt, item 71365 (CARB 72886).
Watts and decibels do not climb together here. The 3500 lists less than the 2000 and 2500, and the 11,500 Watt tri fuel lists less than the 9500. Harbor Freight does not say why.
How loud is a Predator 3500 generator?
A Predator 3500 Watt Super Quiet lists 56 dBA on its product page. Harbor Freight says it runs at "the same volume as a quiet conversation." Its two archived manuals give 56 and 57 dB(A) at 23 feet and 25% load.
Revision 24a of the manual matches the page. Revision 25a, the later one, says 57. Both were archived in February 2026, when the product page still said 56.
At 102 lb on four wheels, the 3500 is not a carry generator. It has electric start with a battery included, 3,000 running watts, an L5-30R twist lock and an RV adapter in the box.
How loud is a Predator 5000 dual fuel inverter?
A Predator 5000 Watt dual fuel inverter lists 61.7 dBA on the page for item 71367, while its three archived manuals print 60.5 or 61.7 dB(A) at 23 feet and 25% load, depending on the revision.
Revision 24d says 60.5, revision 25d says 61.7, and revision 25k goes back to 60.5. The page has stayed at 61.7. We list the page figure first because it is what Harbor Freight shows buyers, with the spread beside it.
California buyers get a different machine. Harbor Freight sends them to item 71424, an electronic fuel injection version that lists "61 dB(A)@ 25% load", 23 feet in its manual, and weighs 115 lb against 110.
How many decibels is a Predator 9500 inverter?
A Predator 9500 Watt Super Quiet lists 67 dBA, and its manual gives 67 dB(A) at 23 feet and 25% load. Harbor Freight describes it as "running very quiet at 67 dBA".
The 11,500 Watt tri fuel inverter is the comparison worth making. Its manual uses the same 23 feet and quarter load and prints 64.5 dB(A), so the larger machine lists 2.5 dB less. It also adds propane and natural gas, a 14-50R outlet and remote start, at 259.5 lb against 257.
Fed into a house through a transfer switch, either one still runs outdoors, and where it sits matters as much as the rating; see generator noise and neighbors.
Are Predator open frame inverters louder?
Yes, mostly. The open frame 4550 Watt lists 64.6 dB(A) at 23 feet and 25% load, 6.6 dB above the Super Quiet 2000 and 2500, and the open frame 8750 Watt page says 75.1 dB.
The 4550 Watt manual reads "Sound Level at 23 feet, 25% load 64.6 dB(A) (economy mode on)". Only this manual mentions economy mode, so the Super Quiet figures may or may not share that setting. The enclosed 9500 Watt, at 67, still lists more than the 4550.
The 8750 Watt open frame is harder to place. Its page says "75.1 dB". Its manuals measure from 21 feet instead: revision 24c says "75 dB @ 21 ft., no load", and revision 25f says "72.7 dB(A) @ 21 ft., 25% load". A 21 foot figure sits closer to the machine than a 23 foot one, so we leave it unranked.
How loud are Predator 6500, 9000 and 13,000 watt generators?
The Predator 6500 Watt lists 73.5 dB(A), the 9000 Watt 78 dBA and the 13,000 Watt tri fuel 78.5 dBA at 50% load. These conventional models list 70.9 to 78.5, the loudest group Harbor Freight sells.
- 70.9 dBA, no condition: 1800 Watt, item 71341, whose CARB twin 72903 lists 68.9 dBA.
- 71.3 dBA at 50% load: 5000 Watt, item 72613.
- 72.5 dB(A), no condition: 4375 Watt, item 59207.
- 73.5 dB(A), no condition: 6500 Watt, item 59205.
- 77 dBA at 50% load: 10,000 Watt, item 72624.
- 78 dBA, no condition: 9000 Watt, item 59206.
- 78.5 dBA at 50% load, 23 feet by its manual: 13,000 Watt tri fuel, item 71386.
Only the 5000, 10,000 and 13,000 Watt models name the load, all at half load rather than the quarter load used for the inverters. A conventional Predator at 50% load and a Super Quiet at 25% load are not measured alike, so the gap between them cannot be read off the two numbers.
The 10,000 and 13,000 Watt models add an automatic idle down that Harbor Freight says "reduces noise and extends runtime" when nothing is drawing power. Harbor Freight gives no figure for idle.
Is a Predator 2000 or 2500 quieter?
No, neither one is quieter: the Predator 2000 and 2500 both list 58 dBA, and both manuals give 58 dB(A) at 23 feet and 25% load. The 2500 is the better buy on paper, at 46 lb against 49.
The 2500 also brings 2,000 running watts against 1,600, a USB-C port and a fresher page. Harbor Freight claims it "easily meets national park sound requirements"; we have not checked any park's rules against that, and rules differ by park.
The 1400 Watt Super Quiet, which listed "60 dB(a)" in September 2025, had dropped off Harbor Freight's site by August 2026. Set beside other brands' inverter generators under $1,000, a Predator 58 only lines up with figures that name the same distance and load.
