JET's JDP-15B benchtop and JDP-15F floor drill presses share the lowest figure we found, 75dB at 39 in. (1 m) without load, in one US manual. JET's JDP-17 and brushless JDP-20S list 80 at that distance, and Powermatic's PM2800B lists 90 at 40 in.

(1 m). The manuals name no weighting or standard, and every figure was taken with the spindle turning free. Between the two JDP-15 models, choose on height and floor space: both use the 3/4 HP motor, 16 belt speeds and 3-1/8 in. of quill travel.

JET shows no price on its own site.

A quick look at the quietest drill presses

A drill press spends much of its running time with the bit turning in open air between holes, so the motor, belts and spindle bearings set a large share of what you hear at the bench. Feeding a bit into hardwood or steel adds its own chatter on top.

Five drill presses sold in the US have a sound figure in their makers' US manuals, and the quietest drill press figure among them reads 75dB at a meter. JET prints one for four woodworking presses and Powermatic for one, each measured about a meter from the machine with nothing being drilled.

No manual names a weighting or a test standard, so the ranking below rests on matching distance and load, and on nothing finer.

How did we pick these drill presses?

A drill press earned its place here through a sound line in a manual that its maker links from a current US product page.

Our reading took in the US product pages and linked manuals for JET, Powermatic, Grizzly, WEN, Rikon, Laguna and Teknatool's Nova range. We also checked Bosch's US benchtop section for the PBD 40, where no drill press is listed.

Three sites stopped us. Woodstock's manual server refused our requests for Shop Fox manuals, Delta's site showed a bot check we did not attempt, and Scheppach's site returned server errors; we found no US listing for a Scheppach press. None of those brands is counted.

Figures are quoted as printed, including the missing space in JET's 75dB. Only figures taken at 1 m with the spindle running free are ranked together, and the only maker prices we saw were on powermatic.com, on October 21, 2026.

We did not measure a single drill press for this page; every decibel number came from the JET and Powermatic manuals linked on their US product pages.

QuietSpecs' picks of the quietest drill presses

Lowest figure, benchtop

JET JDP-15B 15 in. Benchtop Drill Press, 3/4 HP, 115V (716200)

  • Noise: "75dB" at 39 in. (1 m), without load (JET US manual)
  • Price: No maker list price
  • Best for: Small shops that want the lowest maker sound figure and drill mostly shallow holes
  • Skip it if: You bore deep holes for dowels or mortises, where the JDP-17 gives 5 in. of quill travel

JET's US manual for the JDP-15B lists "75dB at 39” (1m) without load", the lowest sound line we found on any drill press with a US manual.

It is a 15 in. benchtop press with a 3/4 HP induction motor, two poly v-belts and 16 speeds from 210 to 3500 RPM. The quill travels 3-1/8 in., and the cast iron table tilts 45 degrees each way.

JET puts it at 154 lb and shows no price.

Lowest figure, floor standing

JET JDP-15F 15 in. Floor Standing Drill Press, 3/4 HP, 115V (716250)

  • Noise: "75dB" at 39 in. (1 m), without load (JET US manual)
  • Price: No maker list price
  • Best for: Drilling tall workpieces in a shop that wants the lowest declared figure
  • Skip it if: Your bench has room and your parts are short, where the JDP-15B does the same work

The floor version of the JDP-15B shares its manual and its sound line: "75dB at 39” (1m) without load".

Motor, belts, speeds, table and quill are identical; a taller column and a wider base leave 30-5/8 in. between spindle and table, room for chair legs or long stock a bench model cannot take.

It stands 63-7/8 in. tall and weighs 172 lb, 18 more than the bench version.

Deepest quill travel at 80 dB, belt drive

JET JDP-17 17 in. Drill Press, 3/4 HP, 115V (716300)

  • Noise: "80dB" at 39 in. (1 m), without load (JET US manual)
  • Price: No maker list price
  • Best for: Furniture makers who drill deep holes and want a long quill with a printed figure
  • Skip it if: Your holes are shallow, where the JDP-15B and JDP-15F declare 75

JET lists "80dB at 39” (1m) without load" for the JDP-17, 5 dB above the JDP-15 pair at the same spot.

The 3/4 HP rating, belts and 16 speeds carry over, but the head grows: a 16-7/8 in. swing, a 2.05 in. quill with 5 in. of travel, and a 14 by 19 in. table that tilts 90 degrees both ways.

It weighs 187 lb and stands 66 in. tall.

Brushless direct drive at 80 dB

JET JDP-20S 20 in. Smart Drill Press, 1.5 HP, 120V (JT1-2060)

  • Noise: "80dB" at 39 in. (1 m), without load (JET US manual)
  • Price: No maker list price
  • Best for: Shops and schools that change speed often and want a sound figure on paper
  • Skip it if: A lower figure matters more than the touch screen, where the JDP-15 pair declares 5 dB less

The JDP-20S drops belts for a 1.5 HP brushless motor driving the spindle directly, continuously variable from 150 to 3000 RPM, with a 5 in. touch screen that suggests a speed for each bit and material.

Its manual lists "80dB at 39” (1m) without load", level with the belt driven JDP-17 and 5 above the JDP-15 pair. It swings 20 in., travels 6 in. and weighs 218.46 lb.

Largest capacity, highest figure

Powermatic PM2800B 18 in. Variable Speed Floor Drill Press, 1 HP, 115/230V

  • Noise: "90 dB" at 40 in. (1 m), without load (Powermatic manual)
  • Price: $2,449.00 maker's list price, checked Oct 21
  • Best for: Production drilling where capacity and a fence matter more than the sound line
  • Skip it if: Your shop shares a wall with the house, where the JET models declare 10 to 15 dB less

Powermatic's manual for the PM2800B lists "90 dB at 40”(1m) without load", the highest of the five and 15 dB above the JDP-15 pair under the same distance and load.

It is an 18 in. variable speed press, 250 to 3000 RPM over a belt, with a 1 HP motor, 6 in. of quill travel and a 20 in. fence in the box.

Powermatic sells it for $2,449.00 on its own store; it weighs 246 lb.

How loud is a drill press?

A drill press runs from 75 to 90 dB on the five comparable maker figures, each taken 39 or 40 in. (1 m) from the machine while the spindle turned with no bit cutting.

  • JET JDP-15B: 75dB at 39 in. (1 m), without load
  • JET JDP-15F: 75dB at 39 in. (1 m), without load
  • JET JDP-17: 80dB at 39 in. (1 m), without load
  • JET JDP-20S: 80dB at 39 in. (1 m), without load
  • Powermatic PM2800B: 90 dB at 40 in. (1 m), without load

JET and Powermatic are sister brands under JPW Industries, and their manuals word the line identically: a sound emission entry in the motor table, measured at 1 m with the spindle free. That shared format is the reason these five figures sit in one group.

The manuals print whole numbers in steps of five and state no tolerance. A 5 dB gap between the JDP-15 pair and the JDP-17 is a clear step on paper, but none of these numbers says how the machines compare while a Forstner bit works through oak.

Is a benchtop drill press quieter than a floor drill press?

No, not on JET's figures: the benchtop JDP-15B and the floor-standing JDP-15F both declare 75dB at 39 in. (1 m) without load, printed side by side in one manual.

Both use the 3/4 HP induction motor, 16 belt speeds from 210 to 3500 RPM, the 15 in. swing and the 3-1/8 in. quill. Only the column and base change, which lifts the head higher and adds 18 lb.

The bigger heads carry the higher numbers. JET's JDP-17, with a 5 in. quill and a 16-7/8 in. swing on the same 3/4 HP rating, declares 80. Powermatic's 18 in. PM2800B, with a 1 HP motor and 6 in. of quill travel, declares 90.

Is a brushless or variable speed drill press quieter?

No, not in JET's manuals. The JDP-20S, whose brushless motor turns the spindle directly with no belts, declares 80dB at 39 in. (1 m) without load, the same as the belt driven JDP-17.

The JDP-20S is the larger machine, with a 1.5 HP motor, a 20 in. swing and 6 in. of quill travel, so the two are not a like for like swap. Even so, removing the belts and pulleys did not bring JET's printed figure under the step pulley press.

Powermatic's PM2800B is variable speed too, from 250 to 3000 RPM through a belt, and declares 90 at 40 in. Neither maker says what spindle speed was set when its figure was taken.

What does "without load" mean on a drill press sound figure?

Without load means the drill press ran with its spindle turning freely and no bit in the work, so the figure covers motor, belt and bearing sound rather than drilling.

That makes machines easier to compare, since no wood, bit or feed pressure changes between them. It also leaves out the loudest moments of real use: a spade bit grabbing in pine, a hole saw ringing in sheet steel, or a dull twist bit squealing as it heats.

JET's footnote says the figures are emission levels and not necessarily safe operating levels. Use them to sort machines before buying, not to predict what a garage or basement shop will sound like on a Saturday.

Which JET and Powermatic drill presses fall outside the ranking?

Two figures from these makers fall outside the ranking because each was taken at another distance: Powermatic's PM2820EVS at 20 in. from the headstock, and JET's J-2500 series metalworking presses at 3 ft.

The PM2820EVS, a 20 in. gear driven press with a brushed DC motor, is rated 80 dB at half the distance used for every ranked figure, and its manual does not say whether a bit was cutting. Powermatic's store listed it as out of stock on October 21, 2026.

JET's manual for its J-2500, J-2530 and J-2550 gives one range, 82 to 84 dB at 3 ft., for all three. A range at 3 ft. cannot be placed against a single value at 1 m, so the J-2530 benchtop model sits in the also considered list.

Several of the two brands' presses print nothing at all. JET's JWDP-10, JWDP-12, JDP-17MF and JDP-20MF manuals and Powermatic's PM2815BT and PM2815FS manuals have no sound line.

Which drill press makers print no noise figure?

Grizzly, WEN, Rikon, Laguna and Teknatool's Nova range print no drill press noise figure in the manuals we read, and Bosch lists no drill press on its US site.

Grizzly's manuals for the G7942 through G7948, the T33959 to T33961 and the G0794 insert carry a general hearing warning and no number. WEN's eleven drill press manuals, from the 8 in. 4206T to the 4227T floor model and the 4233 radial press, have none either.

Rikon's manuals for its 30-100, 30-120, 30-140, 30-212VS, 30-217, 30-230, 30-240 and 30-251 give no figure, nor does Laguna's manual for the DP|20 and DX|20. Teknatool's Nova Voyager manual mentions decibels only to ask for ear muffs rated to 103 DBA.

Frequently asked questions

What is the quietest drill press?

JET's JDP-15B benchtop and JDP-15F floor models share the lowest figure we found, "75dB at 39” (1m) without load", printed once in their shared US manual. JET's JDP-17 and JDP-20S list 80 at the same distance, and Powermatic's PM2800B lists 90 at 40 in. No manual names a weighting or a test standard.

What is a typical drill press noise level?

On the five comparable maker figures, 75 to 90 dB at about 1 m with no bit in the work. Drilling adds the sound of the bit in the material, which none of these figures covers. Powermatic's PM2820EVS lists 80 dB at 20 inches from the headstock, and JET's J-2500 series a range of 82 to 84 dB at 3 ft.

Why do JET and Powermatic print dB instead of dB(A)?

Neither maker explains it. Their manuals give a bare dB with a distance and a load condition, and no frequency weighting or test standard. Both brands belong to JPW Industries and word the line the same way, so their 1 m figures share a group here, but they are never set against a dB(A) declaration from another maker.

Is the Powermatic PM2820EVS quieter than the PM2800B?

Powermatic's own figures cannot settle it. The PM2820EVS is rated 80 dB at 20 inches from the headstock and the PM2800B 90 dB at 40 in. (1 m) without load. A microphone at half the distance reads higher from the same machine, so these two numbers describe different positions and are not ranked.

Do I need hearing protection at a drill press?

JET and Powermatic both say yes. Each manual here tells owners to "Wear ear protectors (plugs or muffs) during extended periods of operation", and JET's footnote says its figures are emission levels, not necessarily safe operating levels. Teknatool's Nova Voyager manual asks for muffs rated to 103 DBA.

Does Bosch sell the PBD 40 drill press in the US?

Not on Bosch's US site. Its benchtop tools section lists miter saws and other machines but no drill press, so the PBD 40, a benchtop press Bosch sells in Europe, has no US model to tie a figure to and is not counted.

Do Grizzly drill press manuals list decibels?

No. Grizzly's manuals for the G7942 through G7948, the T33959 to T33961 variable speed presses and the G0794 insert carry a general warning about machinery noise and hearing, with no figure. WEN's eleven drill press manuals and Rikon's eight are the same.

The bottom line

I went in expecting European manuals to carry this page, as they do for most shop machines, and found the reverse. JET prints a sound line in the US manuals for its JDP-15B, JDP-15F, JDP-17 and JDP-20S, and Powermatic does the same for its PM2800B, each taken 39 or 40 inches from the machine with nothing in the cut. There is no weighting, no standard and no tolerance, so I treat the 5 dB steps as coarse ones.

The pattern still holds up. JET's two 15 inch presses declare 75; the bigger heads declare 80, and the brushless JDP-20S comes out no lower than the belt driven JDP-17. If noise came first for me, I would take the JDP-15B and live with its 3-1/8 inch quill.

  • Powermatic PM2820EVS 20 in. Variable Speed Floor Drill Press, 1 HP, 120V

Powermatic's manual lists "80 dB at 20 inches (508mm) from headstock" for this 20 in. gear driven press, half the distance of every ranked figure and with no load condition stated, so it cannot sit in the 1 m group. On October 21, 2026, Powermatic's store priced it at $3,035.00 with an out of stock notice.
