People searching for DuroMax generator decibels usually want to know whether a big home backup unit will bother the neighbors during an outage, or whether a small one is quiet enough for a campsite. DuroMax answers on every current product page, and on most of them it also says what load the figure describes. This page lists every current US DuroMax generator with a published figure, explains what those figures do and do not cover, and ranks them only against figures stated the same way.
All figures come from DuroMax's US product pages, owner's manuals and sales sheets, read on October 10, 2026. How DuroMax compares with Honda, Champion, Firman and others is a separate question, covered in our guide to quiet generators for home backup.
Our picks are listed above, with full specifications for each.
Each DuroMax product page has a spec table, and the noise figure sits near the bottom of it. On the inverters it reads "Volume @ 25% Load (db) 61 dB" (XP9500iH) or "Volume at 25% Load (dB) 66 dB" (XP13500iH). On the largest open frame models it reads "Volume @ 50% Load (db) 77 dB" (XP15500HX). On the XP2300iH, the XP5500HX and the 13,000 watt open frame models it is a bare "Volume (db)" with no load. The owner's manuals repeat the figure in their specifications table as a Noise Level, and on the XP2300iH the manual supplies the load the page leaves out: "Noise Level 52 dB @ 25% load". DuroMax writes dB on its pages and in its manuals, and dBA on some sales sheets, such as "Runs Quietly (61dBA)" for the XP9500iH, so we quote dB.
So a DuroMax figure is a sound level at a stated load, with no stated distance. No page, manual or sales sheet we read says how far from the generator the reading was taken, so a DuroMax figure cannot be set beside one measured at 7 meters, about 23 feet. A quarter load on the 9,000 running watt XP11000iH is 2,250 watts; half load on a 12,000 running watt open frame model is 6,000 watts. Roughly every 10 decibels sounds about twice as loud, so the 18 dB between DuroMax's quietest and loudest inverter figures is a large gap. Our decibel chart puts these levels beside everyday sounds.
Two things make DuroMax's numbers harder than they look. First, it uses two loads: 25% for the inverters and 50% for the largest open frame models, so a 66 dB inverter and a 74 dB open frame model are not two machines 8 dB apart; they are two different tests. Second, DuroMax's documents do not always agree, as the next section shows. Our explainer on comparing decibel ratings covers why you can only compare like with like.
When DuroMax's documents disagree
- XP11000iHT, tri fuel inverter, 9,000 running watts: the spec table says "Volume @ 25% Load (db) 61 dB" and the manual "Noise Level 61 dB @ 25% load", but the sales sheet says "Runs Quietly (66.9 dB)", the figure DuroMax gives the XP16000iH. We rank it at 61, on the two documents that state a load.
- XP13500iH, dual fuel inverter, 10,500 running watts: the spec table and the manual say 66 dB at 25% load and the page FAQ says "approximately <66 dB", while DuroMax's 13,500 watt home backup page says "approximately <67 dB". We rank it at 66.
- XP15000EH, a legacy dual fuel model: the page says "Volume (db) 83 dB" and the manual says "Noise Level 84 dB". We list both and do not rank it.
The manuals for the open frame models with no stated load put a "<" before the figure: "Noise Level <69 dB" for the XP5500HX and "Noise Level <74 dB" for the XP13000HX, where the pages say 69 dB and 74 dB. We read "<" as "under", treat those pairs as consistent and list the page figure. Several inverter FAQs do the same, such as "approximately <62 dB" for the XP7000iHT beside a spec table that says 62. If you are planning around any figure in this section, assume the higher number.
Inverters at 25% load: quietest first
These are the DuroMax models in its Digital Inverters collection. Each states 25% load and no distance, in the spec table or the manual, so they can be ranked against each other, but not against the open frame figures further down.
- 52 dB: XP2300iH, 1,800 running watts on gasoline. The load comes from the manual; the page gives a bare 52 dB. It was on pre-order, shipping the week of 1/11/2027.
- 61 dB: XP9500iH and XP9500iHT (7,600 running watts on gasoline) and XP11000iH and XP11000iHT (9,000). All four list a 459cc engine and 216 lbs dry. The XP11000iHT sales sheet says 66.9.
- 62 dB: XP7000iH and XP7000iHT, 5,500 running watts from a 320cc engine. The XP7000iH was on pre-order, shipping the week of 1/11/2027.
- 66 dB: XP13500iH and XP13500iHT, 10,500 running watts, 550cc.
- 66.9 dB: XP16000iH and XP16000iHT, 13,000 running watts, 744cc, 368 lbs dry.
- 70 dB: XP28000iH and XP28000iHT, 22,000 running watts, 999cc.
The order does not follow size at the small end: the 5,500 watt XP7000 models list 1 dB more than the 7,600 and 9,000 watt models with the bigger engine. One decibel is a small gap, but it means a smaller DuroMax inverter is not automatically a quieter one. In every pair, the tri fuel version lists the same figure as the dual fuel one; DuroMax gives one figure per model, not one per fuel. Our guide to dual and tri fuel generators sets DuroMax's tri fuel models beside Firman, Westinghouse and WEN.
Open frame at 50% load: quietest first
These are DuroMax's largest open frame models, from its Open Frame Generators collection. Each spec table says "Volume @ 50% Load (db)", and none gives a distance.
- 74 dB: XP15000HX+ and the tri fuel XP15000HXT+, 12,000 running watts on gasoline from a 500cc engine with electronic fuel injection.
- 77 dB: XP15500HX and XP15500HXT (12,000 running watts, 550cc) and XP17500HX and XP17500HXT (13,750, 600cc).
- 78 dB: XP15000HX and XP15000HXT, 12,000 running watts from a 670cc carbureted engine. Both were on pre-order, shipping the weeks of 11/16/2026 and 1/18/2027.
The manuals for the carbureted XP15000HX and XP15000HXT and for the four XP15500 and XP17500 models give the same numbers without a load, "Noise Level 78 dB" and "Noise Level 77 dB", so the load comes from the product pages. The XP15000HX+ manual states it too: "Noise Level 74 dB @ 50% Load".
Open frame, no load stated
These spec tables give a bare "Volume (db)", and the manuals a "Noise Level" with a "<" and no load. They can be ranked against each other only.
- 69 dB: XP5500HX, 4,500 running watts on gasoline.
- 74 dB: XP13000HX and XP13000HXT, 10,500 running watts on gasoline, and the XP13000EH, which DuroMax files under Legacy Models but still sells.
DuroMax pages outside the listing
Five more DuroMax product pages are live but missing from DuroMax's own generator listing. None shows a price, so we list their figures and do not rank them.
- XP4850EH, dual fuel, 3,850 running watts, and XP5500X, gasoline, 4,500 running watts: both pages say "Volume (db) 69 dB" and both manuals "Noise Level <69 dB". The pages say "Available Exclusively At:" above an Amazon logo.
- XP11500EH, dual fuel, 9,000 running watts: the page says "Volume (db) 74 dB" and the manual "Noise Level <74 dB". It too points to Amazon.
- XP10000X, gasoline, 8,500 running watts, in DuroMax's Legacy Models collection: the page says "Volume (db) 72 dB" and the manual "Noise Level <72 dB". The page points to authorized retailers.
- XP15000EH, dual fuel, 12,500 running watts from a 713cc engine, also a legacy model: the page says 83 dB and the manual 84 dB. The page points to Amazon.
DuroMax's site also sells DuroStar generators, including two open frame inverters, and its FAQ says "DuroStar offers a more budget-friendly alternative". They carry the DuroStar name rather than DuroMax's, so they are not on this page.
What changes the noise between DuroMax models
- Inverter or open frame. Several DuroMax inverter FAQs say the model is "significantly quieter than open-frame models". DuroMax rates its inverters at 25% load and its open frame models at 50% load or with no load stated, so its own figures cannot show how large that gap is.
- Engine size. Among the inverters, bigger engines mostly carry higher figures: 61 dB for the 459cc models, 66 for 550cc, 66.9 for 744cc and 70 for 999cc. The 320cc XP7000 models break the pattern at 62.
- Fuel injection. The EFI XP15000HX+ and the carbureted XP15000HX both make 12,000 running watts, and DuroMax lists 74 and 78 dB at 50% load. They also differ in engine size, 500cc against 670cc, and weight, 237 lbs dry against 345 lbs, so the figures do not show which difference accounts for the 4 dB.
- Output. Within the 50% load group, more power does not always mean more noise: the 13,750 running watt XP17500HX lists 77 dB, 1 dB under the 12,000 running watt XP15000HX.
- Load. Each DuroMax model has one figure at one load. DuroMax publishes nothing at full load, so plan for more noise than the figure when a large load such as central air starts.
DuroMax's quiet features, in its words
DuroMax's inverters list Demand Based Variable Idle in their spec tables. The XP11000iH manual says "The low idle feature automatically lowers the RPM of the generator based on the current load to help conserve fuel and lower the noise of the generator," and "Turn on the low idle for better fuel efficiency and to make the generator quieter." The XP2300iH manual says it works "when there is no or minimal load". DuroMax publishes no figure with low idle on and off, and does not say whether its 25% load figures were taken with it on.
The 13,000 watt and carbureted 15,000 watt open frame models list No Load Low Idle. The XP13000HX manual says the idle control feature "lowers the RPM of the generator when there is no load to save gas and decrease engine noise," and "When a load is applied, the engine will resume normal speed to provide usable power." The spec tables for the XP15500HX and XP17500HX say Idle Control: No. DuroMax's FAQ adds a caution for home use: "we don't recommend using the idle control feature with direct home connections due to low wattage appliances with constant power needs."
On mufflers, the FAQ says "DuroMax generators are equipped with oversized mufflers to reduce noise as much as possible" and "The noise generated is due to the engine and not the muffler." It does not recommend "3rd party muffler silencers", and it says changes to the exhaust system "can void your warranty and violate emission standards."
Safety comes before noise
Every pick here lists CO Sensor Shutdown: Yes. The XP11000iH manual says that if dangerous carbon monoxide levels are detected, "The engine will shutdown," and it tells owners to "Use outdoors ONLY in non-confined areas" and to "Keep several feet of clearance on all sides to allow proper ventilation of the generator." Treat the sensor as a backstop, not a reason to bring the generator closer to the house. Never run a generator in a garage, a shed or near an open window to cut the noise. Our explainer on generator noise and neighbors covers how far from the house a generator should sit, campground rules and local noise limits.
How we chose
We read DuroMax's US portable generators collection, which shows 29 generators, 25 of them DuroMax and 4 DuroStar, and opened the product page of every DuroMax model in it, plus the owner's manual and sales sheet linked from each page. We also read the five DuroMax product pages that are still live on the site but missing from that listing. Picks reflect DuroMax's figures, the load it states, output, weight, outlets and the price on DuroMax's site, read on October 10, 2026. Where a page shows a sale price, we list the regular price and note the sale.
Every figure on this page is DuroMax's own, quoted from its US product pages, owner's manuals and sales sheets as read on October 10, 2026, with the load DuroMax gives and a note wherever it gives none. We did not measure any of these generators ourselves.
