How loud is a Bosch heat pump outdoor unit?
A Bosch central heat pump condenser lists 58.0 to 78.3 dB(A) of sound power at full speed, and 39.9 to 61.3 at its lowest printed speed, on the 2026 sound tables for the IDS Edge, Edge Max, Ultra, Premium Connected and Light.
Each table gives a figure per size and mode. The list takes the highest figure in each size's table, heating or cooling, with the lowest one in brackets:
- IDS Edge and Edge Max, 2 ton: 58.0 (Rated 55.5)
- IDS Ultra, 3 ton: 60.1 (MIN 39.9)
- IDS Edge and Edge Max, 5 ton: 62.2 (Rated 58.8)
- IDS Edge and Edge Max, 3 ton: 62.8 (Rated 58.8)
- IDS Premium Connected, 3 ton: 74.1 (Low 53.4)
- IDS Light, 2 ton: 74.9 (Low 59.0)
- IDS Light, 3 ton: 76.0 (Low 60.4)
- IDS Ultra, 5 ton: 76.6 (MIN 59.9)
- IDS Premium Connected, 5 ton: 77.1 (Low 53.1)
- IDS Light, 5 ton: 78.3 (Low 61.3)
The Edge tables stop at Rated speed and give no minimum, so the bracketed Edge figures are not low speed readings. Heating is the louder mode on most sizes. For how condensers compare across brands, see our heat pump guide.
Which Bosch central heat pump is the quietest?
The 2 ton IDS Edge and Edge Max are the quietest Bosch central heat pumps at full speed, at 58.0 dB(A) of sound power in heating, 16.1 below the quietest square condenser Bosch sheets without a cold climate rating.
The two share one sound table. Bosch calls the Edge platform "Built with VRF technology", and the cabinet is different from the rest of the IDS family: side discharge, 39-1/8 inches wide and 16-3/4 deep, against a 29-1/8 inch square for the BOVB condensers.
The Edge Max adds the cold rating: it keeps running at -22°F, where the Edge stops at -13°F. Both sizes up from 2 tons still sit under 63 dB(A) at Max, which no BOVB condenser above 3 tons approaches.
Three of the four Bosch ducted condenser sheets we read print a decibel row in the Product Specifications table that does not match the Sound Data table at the back of the same document.
- IDS Ultra 3 ton: spec table 63 minimum and 70 maximum; sound table 39.9 and 60.1.
- IDS Ultra 5 ton: spec table 60 and 79; sound table 59.9 and 76.6.
- IDS Premium Connected 3 ton: spec table 59.3 and 75.7; sound table 53.4 and 74.1.
- IDS Premium Connected 5 ton: spec table 67.0 and 78.3; sound table 53.1 and 77.1.
- IDS Edge and Edge Max: "Max @ 100% Load" 56, 59 and 61; sound table 58.0, 62.8 and 62.2.
Only the IDS Light sheet agrees with itself, at 74.9 and 59.0 for 2 tons. We rank on the sound tables because they name the mode and speed. On the spec rows alone, the Edge would still lead at 56.
How loud is a Bosch packaged heat pump?
Bosch's IDP packaged heat pumps list 73.8 to 80.9 dB(A) of sound power at full speed, with the IDP Premium quieter than the IDP Plus at both its 3 and 5 ton sizes.
- IDP Premium, 3 ton (BPBB-36RCB-M18S): 73.8 High heating, 59.9 Low cooling
- IDP Premium, 5 ton (BPBB-60RCB-M18S): 73.8 High cooling, 62.7 Low cooling
- IDP Plus, 3 ton (BPHA-36RCB-M16S): 80.8 High heating, 64.2 Low cooling
- IDP Plus, 5 ton (BPHA-60RCB-M16S): 80.9 High heating, 68.1 Low heating
A packaged unit holds the blower as well as the compressor, so these figures cover the whole system outdoors and sit in their own group. Other brands' packaged units are in our packaged HVAC guide.
How loud are Bosch air handlers indoors?
Bosch's IDS Light, Premium and Ultra air handlers list 55.8 to 79 dB(A) across their printed speeds, and on high speed the 2 ton IDS Light BIVA15-24 is lowest at 63.5. Bosch names no distance or standard for these rows.
- IDS Light BIVA15 (High only): 63.5, 69.7, 72.4 and 73.7 for 2 to 5 tons
- IDS Premium BIVB 2 ton: 55.8 Low, 62.5 Medium, 66.9 High
- IDS Premium BIVB 3 ton: 59.7, 66.1 and 70.4
- IDS Ultra BIVB19-36: 63 Low, 66 Medium, 70 High
- IDS Ultra BIVB19-48 and -60: 71 to 78, and 72 to 79
The air handler sits in a closet, attic or basement, so ducts and doors stand between it and you. It is the half of the system people forget to ask about.
How quiet is a Bosch Climate 5000 mini split indoors?
A Climate 5000 Gen 4 wall head lists between 16 and 31.5 dB(A) on Si, its silent fan speed, and between 36.5 and 49 on H. The 24K Max Performance head has the lowest Si figure, 16.
Each sheet lists five speeds, Turbo, H, M, L and Si. Wall heads, with the outdoor figure from the same sheet:
- 6K head with 9K outdoor unit: 47.5 / 43.0 / 31.0 / 18.0 / 17.5, outdoors 56.0
- 9K Regular: 47.5 / 43 / 31 / 18 / 17, outdoors 52.5
- 9K Max Performance: NA / 38 / 33 / 20.5 / 19.5, outdoors 56
- 12K 115V Regular: 44.0 / 36.5 / 32.5 / 21.0 / 17.5, outdoors 52.5
- 12K Regular: 46 / 38 / 33.0 / 18.0 / 18, outdoors 56.0
- 12K Max Performance: 47 / 36.5 / 32.5 / 22 / 19.5, outdoors 56
- 18K Regular: 49 / 45 / 39 / 28 / 20, outdoors 58.0
- 18K Max Performance: 49.5 / 45.0 / 38.0 / 31.5 / 19.5, outdoors 59
- 24K Regular: 51.5 / 43.5 / 39.5 / 21.5 / 19, outdoors 58.0
- 24K Max Performance: 54.5 / 43.5 / 38.5 / 27 / 16, outdoors 61.5
- 30K Light Commercial: 53.0 / 45.5 / 40 / 30.5 / 19.5, outdoors 61.0
- 36K Light Commercial: N\A / 49 / 43.5 / 34.5 / 31.5, outdoors 63.0
On Low, the 9K Regular, the 12K Regular and the 6K head tie at 18. Bosch's product page claims "IDU as low as 23 dB", higher than most Si figures on its own sheets.
Which Climate 5000 ducted or cassette head is quietest?
Among Bosch's concealed and ceiling heads, the 9K Max Performance ducted unit lists the lowest figures, 32.5 dB(A) on H and 23 on Si, ahead of the 9K Regular ducted at 34 and 24.
Ducted heads print no Turbo figure except the 24K Regular, at 43. At the top of the range, the 60K Light Commercial ducted head lists 52 on H and 42 on Si.
One way cassettes list 38 to 44 dB(A) on H and 22 to 26 on Si, with the 9K and 12K Regular both at 22. Four way cassettes run 40 to 52.5 on H and 23.5 to 38.5 on Si, where the 18K Max Performance is lowest at 23.5. The 24K Max Performance four way cassette prints "N/A" for Si.
Read cassettes against cassettes, since a ceiling grille and a ducted head spread sound into the room differently from a wall unit.
How loud is a Climate 5000 outdoor unit?
A Climate 5000 Gen 4 single zone outdoor unit lists 52.5 to 64 dB(A) at maximum, and the multi zone units 59 to 65. The 9K Regular and 115V 12K systems share the lowest single zone figure, 52.5.
The same outdoor unit can carry a different figure depending on the head it is sheeted with. The 9K Regular BMS500-AAS009-1CSXRD lists 52.5 with the wall head, 54.0 with the ducted head, 54.5 with either cassette and 56.0 with the 6K head. Bosch does not say why.
Multi zone outdoor units, Regular then Max Performance: 18K at 59 and 61.5, 27K at 61 for both, 36K at 62.5 and 65, and 48K at 63 and 65. Mini split makers compared side by side are in our mini split guide.
How quiet are IDS Edge multi zone indoor units?
The IDS Edge multi zone indoor units list one "Rated Speed" figure each, from 31.3 dB(A) for the 7K slim ducted unit to 58 for the 5 ton air handler. Without other speeds, they cannot be lined up with the Climate 5000 heads.
- Wall mounted BIWA, 7K to 18K: 31.7, 34.6, 36.7 and 40.6
- Slim ducted BIDA, 7K to 18K: 31.3, 36.1, 36.1 and 40.5
- Compact four way cassette BIKA, 7K to 18K: 34.1, 35.2, 35.3 and 44.3
- Four way cassette BISA, 9K to 18K: 36.9, 41.9 and 46
- Air handler BIVA VCB, 1 to 5 tons: 45.4, 47.8, 50.8, 52.8, 56.3 and 58
These heads pair with the Edge and Edge Max outdoor units, so a quiet Edge system can be ducted, ductless or both.
Bosch's "as low as" lines are floors, the best single number in a range, and we do not rank them. Some match a sheet, some do not.
- IDS Light page, "as low as 59 dBA": matches its 59.0 at low cooling.
- IDP Premium page, "as low as 60 dBA": close to its 59.9.
- IDS Premium Connected page, "as low as 60 dBA": its sound table prints 53.4.
- IDS Plus page, "as low as 56 dBA": no sheet figure matches.
- Climate 5000 page, "ODU as low as 53 dB, IDU as low as 23 dB": sheets print 52.5 and 16.
- IDS Edge and Ultra sheets, "as low as 55.5 dB(A)" and "as low as 39.9 dB(A)": both match their sound tables.
Bosch's new SCS Light air conditioners print no sound figure in their August 2026 data sheets, and its 115V Modular Blower sheet prints none. Neither is a heat pump.
Bosch's discontinued page lists the R-410A versions of the IDS Light, IDS Plus, IDS Premium, IDS Premium Connected, IDP Plus, IDP Premium and Climate 5000, along with the BVA, BWA16 and BCA16 air handlers. Older sheets, back to 2019, stay in Bosch's library, and we used none of them. If a listing leaves R-454B out of the name, check the refrigerant before relying on any figure here.
The rooftop category's Choice, Core, Pro and Compact rooftop units and its commercial split systems are commercial equipment, 3 to 27.5 tons, and are not covered here. Bosch's US site listed no air-to-water heat pump on November 4.
No, a sound power figure describes the noise a condenser emits in total, not the level at your window, so the dB(A) you hear in the yard will be lower and will depend on distance and walls.
Bosch's mini split rows say only "Noise level", naming neither power nor pressure, so we keep them apart from the condenser tables. Our explainer on the two quantities shows how they differ, and the heat pump noise explainer covers defrost and other sounds no table lists.
Because every condenser figure here is Bosch's own sound power, the gaps still mean something: a 10 dB step is roughly twice as loud, so the Edge's 58.0 against the IDS Light 5 ton's 78.3 is a large one.
