Which paint sprayer is the quietest?
Graco's FinishPro II 395 PC lists the lowest sound pressure we found 3 feet from any paint sprayer, 79 dBA, followed by Graco's FinishPro HVLP 7.0 at 82 and its FinishPro GX 19 at 83.
Every rating in this list is Graco's, with the meter 3 feet (1 meter) from the equipment:
- FinishPro II 395 PC: 79 dBA
- FinishPro HVLP 7.0: 82 dBa
- FinishPro HVLP 9.0: 83.0 dBa
- FinishPro GX 19: 83 dBa
- FinishPro HVLP 9.5: 83.4 dBa
- GMAX 3400: 86 dBa
- Pro210ES: 90 dBa
The 395 PC and the Pro210ES carry a note, "@ 70 psi", that the HVLP and GX tables leave out, and the GMAX gives 3.1 ft. So the spread from 79 to 90 is the fairest reading of Graco's sheets rather than one controlled test.
The 395 PC is an air-assisted airless cart for shop finishing, and it weighs 110 lb. The FinishPro HVLP 7.0 at 82 is the lightest machine near the top of this list.
Are HVLP sprayers quieter than airless sprayers?
On Graco's ISO 3744 sound power figures, its HVLP turbines are the quietest group: 94.9 to 96.3 dBA, against 96 for the air-assisted 395 PC and 100 for the Pro210ES and GMAX 3400.
Sound power is the machine's total output, wherever you stand:
- FinishPro HVLP 7.0: 94.9 dBa
- FinishPro HVLP 9.0: 95.9 dBa
- FinishPro II 395 PC: 96 dBA
- FinishPro HVLP 9.5: 96.3 dBa
- Pro210ES: 100 dBa
- GMAX 3400: 100 dBa
The order changes from the 3 ft list. The 395 PC reads lowest at 3 feet but sits third on sound power, behind two turbines. Graco gives no reason for the gap.
The FinishPro GX 19 lists 93 dBa, but to ISO-9614, so it is left off this list. Why a total output figure and a 3 ft reading can put machines in a different order is set out in our sound power primer.
How loud is a handheld paint sprayer?
Graco's TC Pro handhelds read 83.0 to 86.0 dBa at the operator and 90.0 to 94.0 dBa of sound power, all taken "in priming mode" at the operator position, with sound power to ISO 3741.
| Handheld | At the operator | Sound power | Uncertainty K |
|---|
| TC Pro PLUS Cordless | 83.0 dBa | 94.0 dBa | 3 dBa |
| TC Pro Corded | 85.1 dBa | 90.0 dBa | 0.5 dBa |
| TC Pro Cordless | 86.0 dBa | 90.7 dBa | 0.5 dBa |
These come from a different test from the 3 ft cart ratings, in priming mode rather than spraying, so the handhelds are never ranked against the FinishPro rigs.
The PLUS is lowest at the operator and highest on sound power, 4 decibels over the corded TC Pro. Its uncertainty of 3 is also six times the others'. With a spread that wide, the 90.0 for the corded model is the steadier result, and the PLUS buys cordless reach rather than a clear noise edge.
The same manuals cover the contractor twins: Ultra Corded, Ultra Cordless and UltraMAX Cordless share the TC Pro tables.
How quiet is the Fuji Spray Q5 Platinum?
Fuji says its Q PLATINUM turbines are "Rated at 60dba", a figure that covers both the Q5 and the Q4, with no distance, standard or turbine speed attached, so the pair are ranked only against each other.
The same page of Fuji's 2025 catalogue claims the patented design "Reduces operating noise levels by 50%", and the 2026 Q5 sales sheet calls it "the quietest operating turbine on the market". Neither says what it was compared with, so both are quoted and not ranked.
On Fuji's numbers the Q4 and Q5 tie. The Q5 adds a fifth stage, 9.5 psi in place of 9.0, 200 more watts and a speed dial that lets you turn the turbine down.
Do Wagner, HomeRight and Magnum sprayers list decibels?
No. Not one Wagner, HomeRight or Graco Magnum sprayer we checked carries a decibel figure, either in its manual or on Wagner's, HomeRight's or Graco's US pages.
For Wagner that covers the FLEXiO 3500, 4300, 5000, 575, 595 and 3550, the Control Pro 130, 150, 170 and 190, the Control Spray Max and 18V, and the Earlex 5700 and 6700 stations Wagner sells. HomeRight's Finish Max and Super Finish Max manuals have none either.
Graco's Magnum X5, X7, Project Painter Plus, ProX17 and ProX19 manuals list pressure, delivery, weight and size and stop there. The Magnum ProX19 Cordless did print 83 dBa at 3 feet and 93 of sound power, but Graco now marks that page "Product is Discontinued".
What does a paint sprayer's sound rating actually tell you?
A Graco rating gives the level 3 feet from the machine or at the operator, under Graco's own conditions, plus the sound power behind it. The spray gun in your hand is rated in a separate manual.
Graco's SG2, SG3, Contractor and FTx gun manuals each list 78 dBa of sound pressure and 87 of sound power, measured at 3.1 feet while spraying water-based paint at 3000 psi. The pump tables do not say whether the gun was spraying.
Graco's pages print only a "Maximum Sound Pressure Level" row with no distance, so the manual is where the 3 ft and standard details live. Where page and manual agree, as they do for the 395 PC, GX 19, Pro210ES and GMAX 3400, we quote both.
Do you need hearing protection to spray paint?
Yes, Graco's manuals for every sprayer ranked here list "Protective eyewear, and hearing protection" among the gear to wear while spraying.
The handheld figures make the point: 83.0 to 86.0 dBa is measured where your head is. The same manuals also list respirators, protective clothing and gloves as the coating maker recommends.
