A range hood insert is the only part of a custom hood that makes any noise, and once the cabinetry is built around it you cannot swap it cheaply. So the choice deserves more care than the usual "quiet" label on the box, which almost always describes the slowest speed.
We gathered every insert and power pack we could find with a maker-published sone rating, then checked each one against the Home Ventilating Institute (HVI) certified directory. Because louder blowers move more air, we sorted the inserts into airflow bands and compared high-speed ratings only within each band.

Start with airflow, not with the sone number
The single most useful thing we learned: across the certified inserts, the high-speed rating climbs with the high-speed airflow. Broan-NuTone's current inserts run from 3.5 sones at 300 CFM (BBN2303SS) through 6 sones at 400 CFM (PM400SS) to 9.5 sones at 600 CFM (PM600SSV); its basic PM300SS, at 7 sones at 260 CFM, is the exception. Comparing a 300 CFM insert with a 600 CFM one on sones alone tells you mostly that one moves twice the air.
So we grouped the certified inserts into four bands by the airflow HVI certifies at high speed, at 0.1 inch of static pressure:
- About 300 CFM: Broan-NuTone BBN2303SS (3.5 sones at 300 CFM) and PM300SS (7 sones at 260 CFM).
- About 400 CFM: Bosch HUI80553UC (5 sones at 380 CFM), Broan-NuTone PM400SS and PM400SSV (6 sones at 400 CFM through a vertical rectangular duct), and the Zephyr Vortex AK9028BS (7.5 sones at 380 CFM).
- About 600 CFM: Best HBN33096SS and HBN5 single blower (8.5 sones at 620 CFM), Best HBN65306SS (9 sones at 610 CFM), Broan-NuTone PM600SSV (9.5 sones at 600 CFM on 8-inch round) and the Zephyr Monsoon Connect AK9428BS (10 sones at 670 CFM).
- Above 1,000 CFM: Best HBN348212SS (10 sones at 1,130 CFM), Best HBN5 dual blower (11.5 sones at 1,240 CFM) and Best HBN223012SS (13 sones at 1,240 CFM).
Pick your band from what you cook on, then pick the lowest certified figure inside it. If your cooktop would be well served at 400 CFM, a 600 CFM insert will be louder on high and gives you airflow you may never use.
Why we trust the directory over the product page
Every figure we ranked appears both on the maker's spec sheet and in HVI's directory (data generated September 23, 2026). That check mattered more than we expected.
Pages drift from spec sheets. Broan's PM400SSV product page says the insert runs at "1 sone on normal speed" in its description and lists 0.5 sone in its spec table on the same page. The spec sheet and the directory both say 0.8 sone at 130 CFM.
Spec sheets and the directory can disagree too. Broan's PM600SSV spec sheet lists 0.5 sone on normal speed for every duct. The directory lists 0.4 sone at 120 CFM on an 8-inch round duct and under 0.3 sone at 130 CFM on a vertical rectangular one. The high-speed figures match exactly, which is why we ranked on high speed.
Ranges hide the loud end. Zephyr's Vortex spec sheet gives "Sones (Min. - Max.)" of 1.4 to 5 for 200 to 390 CFM. HVI certifies the same insert at 7.5 sones at 380 CFM on high. The Monsoon Connect is listed at 0.8 to 6 sones by Zephyr and certified at 10 sones at 670 CFM. Neither Zephyr figure is false in any way we can prove, but neither can be compared with a certified rating taken at a stated airflow.
The duct is part of the rating
An insert's certified figure belongs to the duct it was tested with. Broan's BBN3 insert is certified at 11 sones at 580 CFM through a 6-inch round duct and 9.5 sones at 580 CFM through a vertical 3-1/4 x 10-inch duct: same airflow, a sone and a half apart. The PM600SSV goes from 10 sones at 560 CFM on 6-inch round to 9.5 sones at 600 CFM on 8-inch round, moving more air more quietly through the bigger duct.
That is why every pick above names the duct its figures come from. If your house only has room for a smaller duct than the one in the rating, expect the insert to be louder than the number you are reading.
Width and fit
Inserts come in two shapes. Broan's PM power packs are compact 21-3/8-inch units, and Broan sells LB30SS and LB36SS stainless liners to close the gap in a 30- or 36-inch hood. Its BBN inserts are built to the cabinet width and, in Broan's words, protect the full bottom of the cabinetry. Best's HBN inserts come in cabinet widths from 30 to 48 inches. Bosch's HUI80553UC and Zephyr's Vortex are 30-inch inserts; Best's HBN348212SS is 48 inches.
A compact power pack is often the easier retrofit into an existing wooden hood. The trade-off in our data is small but real: at about 600 CFM, the full-width Best HBN3 is certified a sone lower on high than Broan's PM600SSV on the same 8-inch duct.
Automatic speed changes
Nearly every insert here can change speed on its own. Best's SmartSense uses infrared sensors to follow heat from the cooktop, and Heat Sentry adjusts the blower speed if it detects exhaust temperatures above 200 degrees F. Broan's PM600SSV has an Auto Mode. These are sensible safety features, but they mean the hood can step up to a louder speed while you are talking over dinner. If you share the room, as you do in an open plan (see our guide to planning a quiet open-plan kitchen), look for an insert whose middle speeds are published so you know what that step sounds like.
The self-rated group
Four inserts in our catalog carry sone figures we could not tie to an HVI listing, so they stay out of the ranking:
- KOBE IN2630SQB-650-5A: the most complete table of the group, from 1.0 sone at 300 CFM in QuietMode to 6.0 sones at 700 CFM on speed 5. KOBE's page also describes QuietMode as "40 decibels (1.0 sone)"; we use the sone figure only.
- Vent-A-Hood BH128SLD: "5.4 Sones" on high speed at 300 CFM, printed beside a decibel figure that Vent-A-Hood says is an approximate equivalent.
- Hauslane IN-R100: "1.5 to 7.0 Sones", with no speeds or airflow attached.
- Windster WS-69TB30SS: 530 CFM and 5.4 sones in one table row, without saying which speed the sone figure belongs to.
Sones and decibels are different scales, and there is no reliable way to turn one into the other, so we never convert. For the background, read sones vs decibels.
Brands that publish nothing we could use
Faber's Inca Pro Plus and Inca Smart insert spec sheets give airflow and dimensions but no sone or decibel figure at all. XO's site returned a bot check instead of product pages, so we could not read its figures from the maker. Best also publishes spec sheets for its CP3, CP5, CC6 and PK22 built-in hoods with HVI ratings on them, and Broan does the same for its PMA400SS, but we could not find those models in the current directory data, so we left them out rather than rank figures we could not confirm.
How we chose
We read the product pages and specification sheets for built-in inserts and power packs from Broan-NuTone, Best, Bosch, Zephyr, KOBE, Vent-A-Hood, Hauslane, Windster and Faber, recording each sone and CFM figure with the speed and duct it describes. We then looked up every model in the HVI certified directory spreadsheet generated on September 23, 2026, ranked only on certified high-speed figures at 0.1 inch of static pressure, and compared them only within an airflow band. Prices are the makers' own, checked on September 28, 2026; Best, Zephyr, KOBE, Vent-A-Hood and Windster show none on their sites, so we say we could not verify one. We did not measure any insert ourselves. Every sone and CFM figure here is a maker's published rating or HVI's certified one, quoted with the speed and duct it describes, and we say each time which figures are certified and which are the maker's own.
