Which central vacuum is the quietest?
VACUFLO's 466Q True Cyclonic and DB3000 Disposable Bag units have the lowest rating on a stated test, 59.7 dB(A) measured 6 feet from the power unit under ASTM draft F11.50.17.
VACUFLO's footnote reads "ASTM draft F11.50.17 test method was used to determine dB(sub>A ratings. Sound levels were measured at 6' from the power unit." No other brand we read gives a distance.
Other brands print figures close to it. VacuMaid lists 58 for five units, and Drainvac and Hide-A-Hose list 60. Those name no distance or method, so a 58 there and a 59.7 from VACUFLO cannot be put in order. The quietest unit inside each brand is the fairer answer:
- VACUFLO: 466Q and DB3000, 59.7 dB(A) at 6 ft
- VacuMaid: SR36, SR38, SR14, SR66 and CS66, 58 with vented exhaust
- Drainvac: six US units at 60
- Hide-A-Hose: A650tv, 60 dB
How do central vacuum makers rate noise?
Central vacuum makers rate the power unit itself, the motor box on the wall. VACUFLO names a distance and a test; VacuMaid names an exhaust setup only; Drainvac and Hide-A-Hose give a plain figure.
VACUFLO: dB(A) at 6 ft, ASTM draft method
VACUFLO, from H-P Products in Louisville, Ohio, prints a "Level of Quietness" row for every current unit on one US page, with the same footnote under all of it. That makes its whole range comparable within the brand.
VacuMaid: "w/ Vented Exhaust", no distance
VacuMaid, built by Lindsay Manufacturing in Ponca City, Oklahoma, labels each figure "DB Rating w/ Vented Exhaust". The exhaust is piped outdoors for the rating, but no distance, weighting or standard is given.
Drainvac and Hide-A-Hose: a plain number
Drainvac's US pages list "Decibels" in the specification table. Hide-A-Hose lists a "noise level rating" and adds that conversation runs 55 to 65 dB. Neither says where the meter was. Our page on comparing decibel ratings covers why that matters.
Which VACUFLO power unit is quietest?
The 466Q and DB3000 tie at 59.7 dB(A) at 6 ft, and the 566Q follows at 60.7. VACUFLO's largest unit, the DB10Max, rates 77.0.
Every current VACUFLO unit on the US page, measured the same way:
- 466Q True Cyclonic: 59.7
- DB3000 Disposable Bag: 59.7
- 566Q True Cyclonic: 60.7
- DB5000: 62.6
- FC650 Filtered Cyclonic: 62.8
- FC550: 64.2
- FC1550: 66.0
- DB7000: 67.0
- 760 True Cyclonic: 67.8
- DB8000: 67.9
- DB9000 and interVac Model 660: 70.0
- MaxAir: 71.1
- FC300: 73.7
- DB10Max: 77.0
The smallest unit is not always the lowest. The FC300, rated for 2,500 sq. ft., sits at 73.7, well above the larger FC650 at 62.8. VACUFLO does not explain the gap.
Which VacuMaid power unit is quietest?
Five VacuMaid units rate 58 with a vented exhaust: the SR36, SR38, SR14, SR66 and CS66. The SR36 is the cheapest of them at $789.95, and the SR66 covers the most area at 10,000 sq. ft.
The rest of the range, by VacuMaid's product pages on November 4, 2026: the SR46, P112, S2600, S2720 and CS46 at 60, the S1660 at 61, the S2400 at 66, the SR800, SR820, SR60 and SR62 at 68, the SR52 at 70, the SR64 at 74, the P125P at 75 and the S3600 at 78.
One mismatch: the SR46 page says 60 while its 2014 spec sheet says 58. We list the page figure.
Which Drainvac central vacuum is quietest?
Six Drainvac units on its US site list 60 decibels, the lowest it prints: the G2-008, S1008, Heritage G2-007H, Cyclonik DV1R12-CT and DV1R800, and Elegance EL700.
Above them, the MP-Air 550, 650 and 700 list 66, the Elegance EL683 and EL2X5 and the MP-Air 683 list 69, the G2-2X3, DV1R15-CT and DV2A310-CB list 70, and the G2-2X5 lists 72.
Drainvac's site sends readers outside North America to an international version. There, the export G2E-007 lists 58 decibels at 7 amps; it is not the US model, so we left it out and read the US pages instead.
Which Hide-A-Hose power unit is quietest?
The A650tv, at a 60 dB noise level rating, against 64 for the F650t and 76 for the M715h. The CV300 page gives no figure.
The A650tv and F650t share every power figure Hide-A-Hose prints: 650 air watts, 15 amps, 143.1 in. of waterlift and 130.2 CFM. What differs is the body. The A650tv has a taller 12 in. can with an inverted cloth bag and a bottom bucket, and the F650t a 14 in. can with a dome lid and an 8 gallon bag.
Hide-A-Hose is best known for its retractable hose, and its home page says the power units come from M.D. Manufacturing.
Does an outdoor exhaust change a central vacuum's rating?
No central vacuum maker we read publishes a rating both with and without an outdoor exhaust, so the effect cannot be read from these pages. VacuMaid rates every unit with the exhaust vented, and VACUFLO requires an outdoor exhaust on its True Cyclonic units.
VACUFLO's footnote says nothing about the exhaust setup behind its 6 ft readings. Drainvac sells an Activac 3 "filter-muffler" for some units and lists a muffler as included on its Elegance models, but prints no figure with and without one.
Where the box goes is the other choice you control. Our quiet basement page covers the rooms these units usually end up in.
What happened to NuTone, BEAM and other brands?
NuTone's central vacuums are discontinued, and BEAM and Cana-Vac now sell from a Canadian company's sites with no US sale we could confirm. Their figures are quoted here, unranked.
NuTone
Broan-NuTone blocks automated readers, so we used Internet Archive copies of its US pages. The April and May 2026 copies mark the PP5501 (66 dB), PP6501 (64), PP7001 (63) and Broan BQ550 (66) "Product Discontinued".
BEAM and Cana-Vac
BEAM's site names Trovac Industries of Blainville, Québec, and Cana-Vac's gives a Blainville address. BEAM's 275 lists "64 dBA" and its 495 "65 dBA", and its 4500 page gives both 72 dBA and 70 dB. Cana-Vac's Signature ACAN490A and ACAN590A list "56 db". Neither site shows US dealers or a currency we could read, so none of these is ranked.
Duovac, also based in Blainville, prints no decibel figure for its four current units. Electrolux's central vacuum domain now leads to a domain sale page, M.D. Manufacturing's own sites would not load for us on November 4, 2026, and we found no maker page for Imperial or Allegro.
