A garbage disposal only runs for a few seconds at a time, but it is one of the loudest things in a kitchen, and it sits in a cabinet that can act like a speaker box. If your kitchen opens onto the room where people eat or watch television, a loud disposal is the thing everyone notices. Finding the quietest garbage disposal should be easy. It is not, because the one number you want does not exist.
No manufacturer publishes a decibel rating for a home garbage disposal. So we built this guide around what makers do disclose (the sound insulation, the mounting and the vibration control) and ranked the models on that.

Why nobody can tell you how many decibels a disposal makes
Search for the quietest garbage disposal and you will find lists quoting precise decibel figures for each model. We could not find a single one of those figures on a manufacturer's website. As Consumer Reports puts it, "Manufacturers are not required to publish a disposal's decibel level."
Some of those lists go further. At least one product ranked on them, complete with a decibel rating, does not appear to exist at all. We found no brand, no model number and no retailer.
That leaves you with three kinds of evidence, in descending order of usefulness:
- What the manufacturer built in to reduce noise: insulation, sink baffles, anti-vibration mounts. These are physical parts you can verify.
- Relative claims from the same manufacturer, like InSinkErator's sound tiers. They are not measurements, but they rank models within one range honestly enough.
- Vague claims like "quieter" or "low decibel output" with nothing behind them. We treat these as marketing.
How to judge disposal noise without a decibel rating
Much of the noise you hear is not the motor itself. It is vibration traveling from the grinding chamber into the sink and down the drain pipes, where the cabinet can amplify it. The features that matter are the ones that interrupt that path.
Insulation around the grinding chamber
A wrap of sound-deadening material around the unit absorbs noise before it reaches the cabinet. InSinkErator's Sound Jacket, Moen's SoundSHIELD and Kraus's QuietStorm are all versions of this. Consumer Reports' buying guide notes that heavier models with more insulation tend to be quieter.
A sink baffle
The rubber splash guard at the sink opening is also a sound barrier. InSinkErator's Quiet Collar is a sound-focused version, and it comes on every Evolution model.
Anti-vibration mounting
The mount connects the disposal to the underside of your sink. A mount that absorbs vibration keeps the sink bowl from ringing like a drum.
Isolation from the drain pipes
This is the one almost everyone forgets. InSinkErator's top model adds a coupler on the tailpipe so vibration does not travel into your plumbing. Consumer Reports also points to flexible mounting connections as a sound-deadening feature.
Understanding InSinkErator's sound tiers
InSinkErator is the only maker we checked that grades its whole range by noise, which makes it the easiest brand to compare within:
- Standard Sound: the Badger series. No insulation. This is the baseline the other claims are measured against.
- Reduced Sound: the Power series. Quieter than a Badger, with no SoundSeal package.
- Quiet SoundSeal: every Evolution 0.75 HP model, with Quiet Collar sink baffle, anti-vibration mount and full trim shell. InSinkErator says it is 75% quieter than the Badger 5.
- Quietest SoundSeal: the Evolution 1.0 HP only. Everything above plus the Sound Jacket insulation and the anti-vibration tailpipe coupler. InSinkErator says it is 80% quieter than the Badger 5.
InSinkErator does not publish how it measured those percentages, and we would not use them to compare against another brand. But within its own range, the order is clear and it matches the hardware: each step up adds a physical part that blocks noise.
Horsepower: what it changes and what it doesn't
Horsepower determines what a disposal can grind and how fast it clears the chamber. More power suits heavier cooking and tougher scraps.
It is not a noise rating. In InSinkErator's range the quietest model also happens to be the most powerful, because the company reserves its best insulation for its top unit. Buy the power you need, then choose the best sound package at that size.
Induction versus permanent-magnet motors
This is a genuine design difference that gets misreported. InSinkErator uses induction motors running at 1725 RPM. Moen, Kraus and Waste King use permanent-magnet motors running from 2500 to 3800 RPM.
You will see confident claims that one type is quieter. We could not find credible evidence either way, so we do not factor motor type into the noise ranking. It is listed in the specs so you can compare designs, not because it predicts noise.
How much should you spend?
Around $150. Basic uninsulated disposals like the InSinkErator Badger 5. They work, they last, and they are loud.
$165 to $250. Insulated budget models such as Moen's Host Series, and InSinkErator's Reduced Sound Power series. A real step up from bare units, but the makers either don't quantify the improvement or rate it below their best.
Around $290 to $360. InSinkErator's Evolution 0.75 HP models with Quiet SoundSeal. For most kitchens, this is where the money is best spent.
Around $350 to $400. The Evolution 1.0 HP and its full Quietest SoundSeal package. Worth it when the sink is in an open room and you use the disposal daily.
Mistakes buyers make
Trusting decibel figures on list articles. If a manufacturer did not publish it, someone made it up.
Buying on horsepower alone. More power without more insulation is simply a more capable loud disposal.
Reusing a worn splash guard. The sink baffle is part of the sound package. Fitting a new quiet disposal under a cracked old guard throws away part of what you paid for.
Ignoring the mount. A loose or worn mounting ring turns any disposal into a rattle. When you replace the unit, replace the mount that comes with it.
Forgetting septic. If your home drains to a septic tank, buy a model designed for it rather than hoping a standard unit is fine.
Other disposals we looked at
Waste King's Legend L-8000 is a one-horsepower insulated unit with a twenty-year limited warranty on its spec sheet, the longest we found. We could not verify a current price, so it is not in our picks, but it is worth pricing if warranty length matters most to you.
GE's Disposall GFC models are listed by GE as no longer manufactured, so we left them out.
How we chose
We read the current product pages and spec sheets from InSinkErator, Moen, Kraus, Waste King and GE, and recorded only what each manufacturer states: horsepower, motor type, grind stages where given, warranty, and exactly what it claims about noise. We used Consumer Reports' buying guide for how disposal noise works in general.
We did not measure decibels ourselves, and we have not used any decibel figure we could not trace to a manufacturer. For disposals, that means none. We ranked on the physical noise-reducing parts each model has, and on how specific and checkable each maker's claims are. Prices shown are manufacturers' list prices on the date shown; check the retailer for the current price before you buy.
