Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1 Microwave

The quietest microwaves: beeps, doors and hum

By The QuietSpecs team · showing #1 Quietest overall

The short answer

  • The Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1 is the quietest microwave we could verify: Breville is the only maker that publishes measured noise figures for its own models, and it pairs a quieter cooking hum with a soft-close door and a mute button.
  • If the door slam is your problem, the smaller Breville Compact Wave has the same soft-close door for half the price.
  • For quiet cooking at a lower price, Consumer Reports rates the LG NeoChef excellent for noise.
  • Over the range, the LG MVEL2033F has certified vent fan ratings and is described by Consumer Reports as quiet.

Our Picks

Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1 Microwave

#1 · Quietest overall

Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1 Microwave

Breville

The only microwave we found with a published operating noise figure: 56.4 dBA, against 59.7 dBA for Breville's older model, from an independent lab test Breville cites. It also has a soft-close door and a dedicated mute button, so it covers three of the four kinds of microwave noise.

What we like

  • Published operating noise of 56.4 dBA, from a lab test Breville cites
  • Soft-close door, which Breville claims is 80% quieter than its older model
  • Dedicated mute button for the beeps

What to know

  • Expensive; you are also paying for an air fryer and convection oven
  • The comparison is against Breville's own older microwave, not other brands
  • Only a 1-year warranty

Toshiba 1.6 cu ft Countertop Microwave

#4 · Best one-key mute

Toshiba 1.6 cu ft Countertop Microwave

Toshiba

For many people the beeps are the whole problem, and this is one of the simplest mutes we found in a manual: hold the 8 key for about three seconds and both the keypad sounds and the end-of-cooking signal switch off. Hold it again to bring them back.

What we like

  • One-key mute that silences keypad and end-of-cooking sounds
  • Large 1.6 cu ft cavity with 1,250 W

Sharp 24-Inch Microwave Drawer

#5 · Best drawer microwave

Sharp 24-Inch Microwave Drawer

Sharp

A drawer microwave has no door to slam: this one opens by button and closes itself after a nudge. Sharp makes no quiet claim for it, but its manual includes a full sound-off setting, which Sharp calls Audible Signal Elimination.

What we like

  • Motorized drawer that closes itself, with no latch to slam
  • Sound-off setting documented in the manual
  • 5-year magnetron warranty

What to know

  • Very expensive, and needs building in
  • Sharp publishes no noise figure and makes no quiet claim

Over-the-range microwaves have a second noise source, the vent fan, and on high it is loud. This LG is certified at 6.5 to 7 sones on high and as low as 1.5 sones at its working speed, and Consumer Reports describes it as quiet.

What we like

  • Certified vent fan ratings: 1.5 sones at working speed through a horizontal duct
  • Described as quiet by Consumer Reports
  • Current model with a large 2.0 cu ft cavity

What to know

  • Still 6.5 to 7 sones on high, which is loud

Buying Guide

Ask ten people what the quietest microwave is and you will find they are complaining about four different things. Some mean the beeps. Some mean the door clacking shut. Some mean the hum while it cooks. And if the microwave hangs over the stove, there is a fourth: the vent fan.

Published figures are rare: one brand measures its door and its hum, and vent fans have certified ratings that few buyers ever see. We went through product pages, owner's manuals and two certification directories to find the models that are verifiably quiet in each way.

Our 6 picks are listed above, with full specifications for each.

The four noises a microwave makes

Beeps. Keypad tones, the end-of-cooking signal and, on some models, a reminder that repeats until you open the door. Whether you can switch these off varies by model, and it is rarely mentioned on the product page. It is in the owner's manual.

The door. Microwave doors open with either a push button or a pull handle. Only Breville makes a specific claim about door noise, for its soft-close models. Drawer microwaves have no swinging door at all.

The cooking hum. Every microwave hums, and almost no manufacturer says how loudly. Breville publishes figures for one model, and LG's support site gives a general range.

The vent fan. Over-the-range microwaves double as a range hood, and their fans carry certified noise ratings in sones, just as range hoods do.

Silencing the beeps

This is the easiest fix and the one most worth checking before you buy. What the manuals say:

  • Breville has a dedicated mute button. On the Compact Wave, the display shows OFF when tones are silenced.
  • Toshiba's ML-EM45PIT mutes with a three-second press of the 8 key, which turns off both keypad and end-of-cooking sounds.
  • Sharp's microwave drawer has a setting it calls Audible Signal Elimination.
  • GE models generally have a sound or beeper volume pad, a sound level in the settings menu, or a mute pad, depending on the model. The GE Profile PVM9179 offers mute, low, normal and loud.
  • Samsung generally puts sound on/off under its options menu, though the steps vary by model.
  • Panasonic's NN-SN686S can have its beep switched off only in the moments after it is plugged in, and Panasonic says the beep on its NN-CS597 cannot be turned off at all.
  • Whirlpool says most audible signals on its over-the-range microwaves cannot be turned off.
  • Galanz's retro model has no mute in its manual, and its end-of-cooking reminder repeats every two minutes. The manuals for the Commercial Chef CHM990B and Farberware FMO11AHTBKB have no mute procedure either.

If beeps are your main complaint, download the manual for the exact model before you buy, and search it for "mute," "sound" or "beep."

The door

Breville is the only manufacturer we found that treats door noise as something to engineer and measure. It cites an independent lab test putting the Compact Wave's soft-close door at 81.5 dBA, against 99.6 dBA for its older BMO735. Both of our Breville picks share that door.

No other brand we checked makes a quiet-door claim, and we found no manufacturer comparing push-button and pull-handle latches for noise. If you cannot stretch to a Breville, the honest answer is that you will have to try the door in a store.

Drawer microwaves sidestep the problem. Sharp's drawer opens at the press of a button and closes itself after a nudge. Sharp makes no noise claim for it, and it costs several times as much as a countertop model, so it makes sense mainly as part of a remodel.

The cooking hum

The hum comes from the parts that do the work. According to GE, the magnetron cycles on and off at anything below full power, which you hear as thumping, clicking or humming, and a cooling fan runs during cooking and for a few seconds after. Whirlpool attributes the hum to the cooling fan and the power supply switching the magnetron. Samsung adds that the noise may get slightly louder as the oven ages.

How loud is it? LG's support site says a microwave makes about 45 to 50 dB of vibration noise, and that this is normal. Breville is the only brand with a figure for a specific model: 56.4 dBA for the Combi Wave, against 59.7 dBA for its older microwave. Those numbers come from different sources with no shared method, so do not read them as the Breville being louder than an LG.

One idea we could find no support for: that inverter microwaves are quieter. Panasonic, LG and Breville all sell inverter models, and all describe the benefit as smoother, more even heating. None claims it is quieter.

With so few published figures, the best independent evidence is Consumer Reports, which tests noise as part of its microwave ratings. It rates the LG NeoChef MSER1590S excellent for noise while cooking.

Over-the-range microwaves: check the fan

An over-the-range microwave's vent fan is rated the same way a range hood is, in sones, where 2 sones sounds twice as loud as 1. The ratings are in two public directories: the Home Ventilating Institute's, and the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers', which covers Whirlpool, GE, LG, Samsung and their sister brands.

Two things stand out in those directories.

They are loud on high. Most over-the-range fans are certified at 6 to 8.5 sones at high speed, and 1 to 3 sones at their working speed of around 100 CFM. The quietest high-speed ratings we found were about 4 to 5 sones, on a handful of Frigidaire, Whirlpool and GE models that are either no longer made or whose availability we could not confirm.

The advertised airflow is not the certified airflow. Bosch markets the HMV8054U at 385 CFM; it is certified at 280. Samsung's ME19R7041FS is sold as 400 CFM and certified at 310. LG, Whirlpool and Frigidaire models sold as 400 CFM are certified between 250 and 310.

If your kitchen allows it, a separate range hood can be quieter and move more air: the quietest hood in our range hood guide is certified at 4 sones while moving 470 CFM. If it doesn't, compare the certified sones at the speed you will actually use, and remember that Consumer Reports scores cooking noise and venting noise separately for these models.

Normal noises, and the ones that aren't

Most microwave sounds are harmless. GE lists relay clicks at the start of cooking, the hum of the clock transformer on standby, and on over-the-range models a vent damper click and a fan that switches itself on when the cooktop below gets hot. Samsung says turntable clicks and food popping are normal too.

A few are worth acting on:

  • Thumping or rumbling usually means the turntable or its roller support is dirty or out of place. Whirlpool's advice is to clean and reseat them. Panasonic's and Breville's manuals say the same about a dirty roller ring.
  • Rattling, according to LG, often comes from the installation, an uneven surface, or something stored on top of the microwave.
  • A hum that is noticeably louder than a month ago, rattling that continues after you reseat the filters, or popping that continues after cleaning all call for service, according to Samsung.

Samsung also warns never to run a microwave empty.

Mistakes buyers make

Assuming every microwave can be muted. Some can't, and the product page won't tell you. The manual will.

Paying for an inverter to get quiet. Inverters heat more evenly. No maker says they are quieter.

Trusting the CFM on the box. For over-the-range models, the certified airflow in our examples was 20% to 40% lower than the marketing figure.

Ignoring the door. You will close it thousands of times. If you can, try it in a store.

Treating a new noise as normal. A hum that has grown louder is the one Samsung says to have checked.

How we chose

We read product pages and owner's manuals from more than a dozen microwave brands, recording what each says about beeps, door design and noise, and exactly how each mute function works. For over-the-range models we used the certified ratings in the Home Ventilating Institute and Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers directories. Our explanations of normal and abnormal noises come from GE, Whirlpool, Samsung and LG support pages, and we used Consumer Reports' published ratings where manufacturers publish nothing.

We did not measure any microwave ourselves. Where we describe a mute procedure, it is paraphrased from the manual, so check the manual for your exact model.

Common questions

What is the quietest microwave?

The Breville Combi Wave 3-in-1 is the only microwave we found with a published operating noise figure: 56.4 dBA, from a lab test Breville cites. Among microwaves without a published figure, Consumer Reports rates the LG NeoChef MSER1590S excellent for noise while cooking.

How many decibels is a microwave?

Almost no manufacturer says. LG's support site says a microwave typically makes about 45 to 50 dB of vibration noise and that this is normal. Breville publishes 56.4 dBA for its Combi Wave and 59.7 dBA for its older model. No other brand we checked publishes a figure for any model.

Can you turn off the beep on a microwave?

On many, yes, but check the manual before buying. Breville has a mute button, Toshiba uses a long press of the 8 key, Sharp's drawer has a sound-off setting and GE models use a sound or mute pad. Some cannot be silenced: Panasonic says the NN-CS597's beep cannot be turned off, and Whirlpool says most signals on its over-the-range models cannot be.

Are inverter microwaves quieter?

No manufacturer we checked claims that. Panasonic, LG and Breville all describe inverter technology as giving smoother, more even power, which helps with defrosting and heating. None of them says it reduces noise.

Why is my microwave humming or clicking?

Usually because it is working normally. According to GE, below full power the magnetron cycles on and off, which causes thumping, clicking or humming, and the cooling fan runs during cooking and for a few seconds afterward. Whirlpool and Samsung both say a low hum or buzz is normal.

When is microwave noise a problem?

Samsung says to call for service if the hum is noticeably louder than it was a month ago, if rattling continues after you reseat the filters, or if popping continues after cleaning. Whirlpool says thumping or rumbling usually means the turntable or its roller support is dirty or out of place, so clean and reseat those first.

How loud is an over-the-range microwave fan?

Loud on high. In the certified directories, most over-the-range vent fans are rated 6 to 8.5 sones at high speed and 1 to 3 sones at working speed. The certified airflow is also lower than advertised: several models sold as 400 CFM are certified at 250 to 310.

What We Also Considered

These are worth knowing about, and why they didn't make the list.

  • Panasonic 1.2 cu ft Inverter Microwave

A well-known inverter microwave, but its beep can only be switched off in the moments after you plug it in, and Panasonic's manual and its own help page give different key sequences for doing it.

  • Bosch 800 Series Over-the-Range Convection Microwave

Marketed at 385 CFM and certified at 280, at 7 to 8 sones on high. It costs far more than the LG without a quieter certified rating.
