Two Dysons share the brand's lowest vacuum figure, 82 dBA of sound power in Boost mode on carpet: the V15 Detect, on its Professional edition sheet ($849.99 for business), and the Motorbar V11 ($569.99 for business).

The Gen5detect lists 84 dBA under the same Boost on carpet wording, from an Australian sheet. The $299.99 Car+Boat reads "HP82 dBa" with no mode, so it is not ranked.

A quick look at the quietest Dyson vacuums

Dyson vacuum decibels start with a tie: the V15 Detect and the Motorbar V11 both list 82 dBA of sound power with Boost running on carpet, rising to 87 dBA over hardwood. Both numbers come from US technical sheets that Dyson writes for business buyers, not from the consumer store.

Those two, the Gen5detect at 84 dBA on an Australian sheet, and the Car+Boat at "HP82 dBa" are the only current US Dyson vacuums with a maker figure. The V8, V12, V16, Gen5outsize, PencilVac, Ball Animal 3 and robots have none.

Every Dyson number is sound power and most name Boost, the strongest mode, so the figures sit higher than many brands' quietest-setting claims. Within Dyson, only the three stick figures stated as Boost on carpet are ranked.

How did we pick these Dyson vacuums?

We picked these Dyson vacuums by listing every model on Dyson's US shop all floorcare page in October 2026 and hunting for a maker sound figure for each.

That meant each US product page, Dyson's US for business documents, and its sheets and stores for Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Singapore, Germany, Japan and the UK.

A non-US sheet counted only when it named the same model Dyson sells in the US, which admitted the Australian Gen5detect sheet. The V11 Extra and Singapore's V11 Absolute, not sold under those names here, are cited for context only.

Dyson's servers refused plain scripted requests with HTTP 403, so we read every Dyson page in a browser; the technical PDFs downloaded normally. Dyson UK's business specifications page listed no vacuum documents.

Picks are ordered by the Boost on carpet figure, with the Car+Boat last because its rating names no mode. We did not measure a Dyson in Boost on carpet, on hardwood or in the hand; each number is copied from the Dyson sheet named beside it.

QuietSpecs' picks of the quietest Dyson vacuums

Tied for Dyson's lowest figure

Dyson V15 Detect Pro Cordless Vacuum (Professional edition)

  • Noise: Boost: 82 dBA carpet, 87 dBA hardwood, sound power (maker)
  • Price: $849.99 maker's list price, checked Oct 25
  • Best for: A carpeted home where the vacuum will spend time in Boost
  • Skip it if: Most of your floors are bare boards, where Dyson's own hardwood figure is 87 dBA

Dyson's US sheet for the V15 Detect Professional edition reads "Sound power level: In Boost mode 82dBA on carpet, 87dBA on hardwood floor", tied for the lowest Boost on carpet figure Dyson prints.

The Pro kit, $849.99 from Dyson for business, adds a second click-in battery, a spare filter and a low reach adaptor to the Digital Motorbar head. Homes can buy the V15 Detect Absolute for $599.99, though that page prints no number.

Lowest priced 82 dBA Dyson

Dyson V11 Cordless Vacuum for Business (Motorbar)

  • Noise: Boost: 82 dBA carpet, 87 dBA hardwood, sound power (maker)
  • Price: $569.99 maker's list price, checked Oct 25
  • Best for: A small office, rental or home where the V15's dust sensor is not worth $280
  • Skip it if: You want laser dust detection or a second battery in the box

The V11 sold through Dyson for business links to a 2023 US sheet with the same wording as the V15: "In Boost mode 82dBA on carpet, 87dBA on hardwood floor".

At $569.99 it costs $280 less than the V15 Detect Pro, with a Motorbar head, 185 AW in Boost and up to 60 minutes of run time. An older US V11 sheet rates a High Torque version at 88 dBA in handheld Boost instead.

Most suction among the rated sticks

Dyson Gen5detect Cordless HEPA Vacuum (Iron/Purple)

  • Noise: Boost 84 dBA, Digital Motorbar on carpet, sound power (maker)
  • Price: $719.99 maker's list price, checked Oct 25
  • Best for: Thick carpet and pet hair, where its extra suction earns the extra decibels
  • Skip it if: A low Boost figure matters more than suction, where the V15 or V11 lists 82 dBA

Dyson prints no Gen5detect figure in the US.

Its Australian and New Zealand business sheet for the same model gives "Sound power level (dBA) Boost mode: 84 dBA (Digital Motorbar cleaner head on carpet)", two dBA above the V15 and V11 under matching Boost on carpet wording.

In exchange it lists 262 AW and 752W against their 545W, HEPA sealing, and up to 70 minutes in Eco. It was $719.99 at dyson.com.

Dyson's rated handheld

Dyson Car+Boat Cord-Free Handheld Vacuum

  • Noise: "HP82 dBa", sound power, no mode named (maker)
  • Price: No maker list price
  • Best for: Car seats, stairs and spills, kept apart from floor cleaning
  • Skip it if: You want one machine for floors and car, where a stick that converts to a handheld covers both

Dyson's US sheet for the Car+Boat, dated 4.1.2025, reads "Sound power level: HP82 dBa", with no mode named and no explanation of the HP prefix.

The handheld has two power modes, a mini motorhead and a 0.54 L bin, and its US page says acoustic felt and closed-cell foam "absorb vibrations, to reduce noise." Dyson listed it at $299.99, in stock.

How many decibels is a Dyson vacuum?

Dyson vacuum decibels, where Dyson prints them, run from 82 to 87 dBA of sound power. Each line below keeps one kind of figure, and only the first line is ranked. Prices come from Dyson's US store or its for business pages in October 2026.

  • Boost mode on carpet, sound power: V15 Detect Pro 82 dBA ($849.99 for business), Motorbar V11 82 dBA ($569.99 for business), Gen5detect 84 dBA from the Australian sheet ($719.99).
  • Boost mode on hardwood, sound power: V15 Detect Pro 87 dBA, Motorbar V11 87 dBA.
  • No mode named, sound power: Car+Boat "HP82 dBa" ($299.99).
  • Handheld modes on older sheets: V11 with High Torque head 88 dBA in handheld Boost, Cyclone V10 87 dBA in handheld max mode.

What is the quietest Dyson vacuum?

The V15 Detect and Motorbar V11 tie as the quietest Dyson vacuums on paper, at 82 dBA in Boost on carpet. The Gen5detect follows at 84 dBA under the same wording. Nothing else Dyson sells can join that ranking.

The tie is genuine on Dyson's paperwork: the two sheets carry the exact same sound line, word for word, and both machines run a 545W motor at 125,000rpm. The V15 adds a piezo sensor that counts and sizes dust, with the tally shown on its LCD screen.

The Car+Boat's HP82 matches the lowest stick number, but Dyson names no mode for it, so calling it as quiet as the V15 would be a guess.

Why does Dyson list a carpet and a hardwood figure?

Dyson splits its V15 Detect and V11 figures by floor, both in Boost: 82 dBA for carpet, 87 dBA for hardwood. Dyson gives no reason for the gap, and the Gen5detect sheet names carpet alone.

For a flat with bare floors, 87 dBA is the figure that applies when Boost is on. That is five dBA above the carpet number for one machine, and a five dBA step is easy to hear.

The floor split also means the Gen5detect's 84 dBA should be set against the V15's 82, never its 87. Its sheet says "Digital Motorbar cleaner head on carpet", and Dyson printed no hardwood number for it.

How loud is the Dyson V15 Detect?

The Dyson V15 Detect lists Boost at 82 dBA for carpet and 87 dBA for hardwood floor, as sound power, on its US Professional edition sheet dated 6.15.2023. No other V15 document we found prints a number.

That sheet is for the Pro kit, $849.99, which adds a second battery and a spare filter. Dyson's consumer store sells the V15 Detect Absolute with a car cleaning kit for $599.99, and its page has no sound row.

Dyson's V15 user manual describes three power modes: Eco for "Maximum run time", Auto or Med, where "Suction power automatically adapts to dust levels", and Boost. The 82 and 87 dBA describe Boost only, so a V15 left in Auto spends much of its time below the mode Dyson rated, without a published figure for it.

What is the Dyson V11 noise level?

The Dyson V11 noise level, on the current US sheet, is 82 dBA for carpet and 87 dBA for hardwood in Boost, a 2023 document for the Motorbar version Dyson sells to businesses for $569.99.

Older sheets tell a different story. Dyson's earlier US V11 sheet, for the High Torque head version, lists "Handheld Boost mode 88 dBA", and the Australian V11 Extra sheet also gives 88 for handheld Boost.

Those are not a louder V11 so much as a different test condition: wand off, held in the hand, no floor named. Match the head on any V11 you buy to the sheet before quoting either figure.

Is the Gen5detect louder than the V15 Detect?

Yes, by two dBA on Dyson's own sheets: 84 dBA for the Gen5detect against 82 for the V15 Detect, both in Boost on carpet. The Gen5detect figure comes from Dyson Australia and New Zealand, since no US document gives one.

The Gen5detect also draws more power. Its Australian sheet lists 752W and 262 AW, against the 545W on the V15 sheet, and its motor spins at 135,000rpm instead of 125,000.

Dyson's US page sells the Gen5detect for $719.99 and lists both the Fluffy Optic and Digital Motorbar heads in its specifications, yet its in-the-box list names only the Fluffy Optic. The 84 dBA belongs to the Digital Motorbar, so check which heads your box holds.

How loud is the Dyson Car+Boat handheld?

The Dyson Car+Boat lists "Sound power level: HP82 dBa" on its US sheet, dated 4.1.2025, with no mode, tool or distance named. It is Dyson's only handheld vacuum with a published figure.

Dyson gives the Car+Boat two power modes, 19.8 Air Watts in Powerful mode and 116 in Boost, and the sheet lists five minutes in Max mode. Which setting the HP82 figure describes, the sheet does not say.

The US product page adds that acoustic felt and closed-cell foam "absorb vibrations, to reduce noise." Our handheld vacuum guide sets the Car+Boat beside other makers' hand vacs.

Which Dyson vacuums have no decibel rating?

Most current US Dysons have no decibel rating: the V8 Cyclone, V12 Detect Slim, V10 Konical, V16 Piston Animal, V15s Detect Submarine, Gen5outsize, PencilVac, Ball Animal 3, Big Ball Turbine, the wet cleaners and every robot.

Their US pages give suction, weight and run time in a specifications table with no sound row. The Ball Animal 3, a corded upright with a 50 ft cord and 290 AW, showed out of stock at $449.99, and the Complete version at $599.99.

We also checked Dyson's business documents for Canada, Australia and Singapore and sample pages from its German, Japanese and UK stores. None added a figure for these models, so they appear here unranked, not as quiet or loud.

Are Dyson robot vacuums quiet?

Dyson robot vacuums have a Quiet mode, but Dyson publishes no decibel figure for any of them. The Spot+Scrub Ai, $1,199.99, offers "four different cleaning modes: Auto, Quick, Quiet or Boost".

Dyson's FAQ for that robot says it "features a Quiet mode setting if you'd like to clean your home without making too much noise, or disturbing a sleeping partner or child." The R1 Nurovi Dry, $549.99, and the R3 Nurovi Spot+Scrub UV, $1,199.99, print no figure either.

Robot makers that do publish numbers are compared in our robot vacuum guide.

Does Dyson make a silent vacuum?

No, Dyson does not call any of its vacuums silent. Its pages prefer "Acoustically engineered", which the V11 for business page explains as "Designed to absorb vibrations and dampen noise to keep sound levels down."

An 82 dBA sound power rating describes the total acoustic energy the machine sends out in Boost, which is a lot. What you hear at arm's length is lower than the sound power number, by an amount Dyson does not publish.

What does dBA of sound power mean on a Dyson sheet?

Sound power, the quantity on every Dyson vacuum sheet, describes the noise a machine emits in total, independent of where a listener stands. Sound pressure, which some other vacuum makers print, is measured at a set distance from the machine and reads lower.

That is why Dyson's 82 dBA cannot be set beside a rival's 70 dB(A) sound pressure figure, or a figure that names no quantity. Our sound power and sound pressure explainer covers the difference, and comparing decibel ratings shows how to read mixed labels.

Inside Dyson the labels are consistent: every vacuum figure says sound power, and all three stick ratings name Boost, which is what lets those three be ranked.

Frequently asked questions

How many decibels is a Dyson vacuum?

Where Dyson publishes a number, 82 to 87 dBA of sound power. The V15 Detect and Motorbar V11 list 82 dBA for carpet in Boost, 87 for hardwood, the Gen5detect 84 in Boost on carpet, and the Car+Boat "HP82 dBa" with no mode. Older V11 and V10 sheets give 88 and 87 in handheld modes.

Which Dyson vacuum is the quietest?

Among figures Dyson states the same way, Boost mode on carpet, the V15 Detect and the Motorbar V11 tie at 82 dBA, with the Gen5detect at 84. The Car+Boat's HP82 names no mode, and most current Dysons carry no figure, so the ranking covers only three machines.

Is the Dyson V15 louder than the V11?

Not on paper. Dyson's current US sheets for the V15 Detect Pro and the Motorbar V11 print the identical line, with Boost at 82dBA for carpet and 87dBA for hardwood floor. An older V11 sheet says 88 dBA in handheld Boost, a different configuration and mode.

Why does Dyson rate its vacuums in Boost mode?

Dyson does not say why. Boost is the strongest of the three power modes in the V15 user manual, so a Boost figure describes the top of the range rather than a gentle setting. Eco and Auto get no number on any Dyson vacuum sheet.

Is a Dyson louder on hardwood than on carpet?

Yes, by Dyson's own numbers. The V15 Detect and V11 sheets put carpet at 82 dBA and hardwood floor at 87, both in Boost and both sound power, a five dBA difference for one machine on two surfaces.

What does HP82 mean on the Dyson Car+Boat?

Dyson does not explain it. The US sheet prints "Sound power level: HP82 dBa" and names neither of the two power modes, so the figure tells you the Car+Boat's sound power without saying which setting produced it.

Does Dyson publish decibels for the V12, V16 or Gen5outsize?

No. Their US product pages list suction, weight and run time but no sound row, and no Dyson technical sheet we found for any region gives a figure for these three, the V8 Cyclone, the PencilVac or the robots.

The bottom line

Dyson sells about two dozen vacuums in the US and prints a sound figure for four of them, all inside technical sheets written for business buyers. Its consumer pages, even for the $979.99 V16, have no sound row at all, though the Car+Boat page talks up its acoustic felt and foam.

What I respect is the choice of mode. Dyson rates Boost, the loudest setting, and on the V15 and V11 it splits carpet from hardwood, which makes the figures look worse than a best case number from another brand.

For a home, I would buy the V15 Detect Absolute at $599.99, since the 82 dBA belongs to a V15 Detect sheet even though the consumer page shows no number. I would skip the Gen5detect if noise is the deciding point: two dBA more in Boost, for more suction I may never use.
