How to make a dishwasher quieter with what Bosch, GE, Whirlpool, Miele, Samsung, LG, ASKO, Frigidaire and Fisher & Paykel tell owners: load clear of the spray arms, clean the filter, pick a quiet program, mute the tones, then check levelling, brackets, insulation and the drain hose.

Key takeaways

  • GE says items poking through the bottom of a rack can block a spray arm and cause noise, and moves tall utensils to the upper rack so they stop knocking on the inner door.
  • Miele prints 37 dB(A) for the Extra Quiet program of its G 7766 SCVi, ASKO 37 dB(A) for Night mode, and Frigidaire 42 dBA for Quiet and Gentle against 45 on Normal.
  • GE's installation instructions keep the toe kick against the floor "to reduce sound from under the dishwasher" and ask installers to smooth out a bunched insulation blanket.
  • Bosch, GE, Whirlpool and ASKO set drain hose heights to stop siphoning, not noise; Bosch wants part of the hose at least 33 inches off the floor.
  • Built-in dishwashers in our table of maker figures run from 38 to 62 dBA, half at 45 dBA or lower, and none of the makers we read offers add-on insulation.

Knowing how to make a dishwasher quieter starts inside the tub: load so nothing touches a spray arm, keep the filter clean, and choose a quiet program where your model has one. Behind the toe kick come levelling, brackets, insulation and the drain hose, all set out in the makers' own installation instructions.

Every step here comes from a dishwasher maker's own document, ordered from free habits to jobs that need a screwdriver. To pin down what a particular hum, clunk or squeal means, start with our guide to dishwasher noises, which sorts the sounds by stage of the cycle.

How do you make a dishwasher quieter?

Make a dishwasher quieter by loading it clear of the spray arms, cleaning the filter, running a quiet or delayed program, muting its tones, and checking that it is level, fastened, insulated and plumbed as its installation instructions say.

Roughly in order of effort:

  1. Reload anything that hangs through a rack or rattles loose.
  2. Clean the filter and check that the spray arms spin freely.
  3. Use a quiet program or the delay timer, if your model has them.
  4. Turn the end of cycle signal and button tones down or off.
  5. Level the dishwasher and fasten it to the countertop or cabinets.
  6. Put the insulation blanket, sound pieces and toe kick back where they belong.
  7. Check the drain hose route and the household water pressure.

Does the way you load a dishwasher change the noise?

Yes. GE, Whirlpool, Bosch, LG, Miele and ASKO all list badly placed dishes as a source of noise, from a spray arm striking a pan to light plastic rattling in the jets. Reloading costs nothing.

GE's owner's manual warns against items that poke through the bottom of a rack or the silverware basket and block a spray arm, which "could result in noise during operation and/or poor wash performance." For silverware rattling on the door, GE suggests moving tall utensils to the upper rack.

Whirlpool's guide to normal sounds puts heavier items on the lower rack and wants light ones secured and utensils kept apart. It also says that overloading makes dishes clatter against each other, while underloading leaves them free to chatter.

Whirlpool's thumping page traces that sound to items reaching past the racks into the wash arms. Bosch's SHE43DM5N manual asks for dishes "resting on the tines and not hitting each other", and LG says to "leave space between light dishes such as plastic plates."

Miele's G 7000 operating instructions say to "Secure light items to the MultiClips" on models that have them. For a knocking or rattling wash, Fisher & Paykel says to pause the program and rearrange the dishes, and ASKO to check they sit securely and that the arms turn.

Does a dirty filter make a dishwasher noisy?

Yes. Whirlpool says items stuck in the filter can cause a buzzing noise, and LG and Samsung say a filter that is clogged or not seated properly can rattle or bounce during the cycle.

Whirlpool's buzzing page starts with the filter area and any foreign objects in it. LG's fix is to clean a dirty filter "and reinsert the filter securely." Samsung adds that if your manual never mentions removing the filter, it is not removable on that model.

Whirlpool's general advice ties routine care to quieter running: clean the filters, clear debris from the spray arms and check the drain path. ASKO's user manual asks owners to spin the spray arms by hand to make sure they rotate. Before reaching into the sump or pump, follow your own manual and cut the power first.

Is there a quiet cycle on a dishwasher?

Yes, on some models. Miele has Extra Quiet, ASKO has Night mode, Frigidaire has Quiet and Gentle, and Bosch, Beko and Cove list quiet options. Each one trades a longer or gentler wash for less noise.

Where the maker prints a figure for the quiet setting, the drop is a few decibels:

Maker and modelUsual figureQuiet setting figure
Miele G 7766 SCVi AutoDos39 dB(A), sound powerExtra Quiet, 37 dB(A)
ASKO DBI776IXXLSSOF39 dB(A), labelled maximumNight mode, 37 dB(A)
Frigidaire Gallery GDPH4525AFNormal cycle, 45 dBAQuiet and Gentle, 42 dBA

Miele describes Extra Quiet as a program "with a longer program cycle time", and ASKO's user manual says of Night mode that "The program time is extended." ASKO prints its 37 dB(A) on the DBI776IXXLSSOF page. Frigidaire's owner's guide says its option lowers the water pressure in the spray arms and suits lightly soiled loads only.

Three more makers name a quiet setting without a figure. Bosch lists an Extra Quiet option on the 300 Series SHE3ADF5N spec sheet, and Beko an "Extra Quiet Function". Cove's use and care guide says its Extra Quiet cycle "Reduces pump speeds."

How do you run a dishwasher at night without hearing it?

Delay start moves the noise to hours when nobody is in the kitchen. GE, Bosch, Miele, ASKO, Fisher & Paykel and Danby all fit a timer that holds the cycle back for hours before it starts.

GE's timer runs up to 8 to 12 hours depending on model, Bosch's SHV68T53UC and ASKO's up to 24 hours, and Miele's offers Start at or Finish at. Bosch's SHE43DM5N moves the setting into its Home Connect app.

Two cautions come with the timer. Bosch says not to use Delay Start with liquid detergent, which can leak out of a closed dispenser. Miele asks for a dry detergent compartment, no liquid detergent, and the detergent added only just before the timer is set, to keep it away from children.

How do you silence a dishwasher?

Silencing a dishwasher means switching off its end of cycle signal and button tones in the settings menu. Whirlpool, GE, Bosch, Miele, ASKO and Fisher & Paykel all allow it, though fault alarms stay on.

The steps differ by maker:

  • Whirlpool: hold Hi Temp for 5 seconds, press Start/Resume, step to Sound Level and set S0.
  • GE: press Dry Boost 5 times within 5 seconds to switch the control sounds on or off.
  • Bosch SHE43DM5N: signal volume has four levels, from 0 LEDs (off) to 3.
  • Bosch SHV68T53UC: signal volume runs off, low, medium and loud.
  • Miele G 7000: end of program signals and keypad tone each have 7 settings, or none for off.
  • ASKO: feedback and notification volumes each run from 0 to 3.
  • Fisher & Paykel: setting Sound to Off silences every tone except fault alerts.

Miele says the fault alarm "cannot be deactivated", and ASKO says errors always sound a loud buzzer. A dishwasher that beeps with a code on show is reporting a fault, which a mute setting will not cover.

Does installation make a dishwasher louder?

Yes. Whirlpool says a dishwasher that is not level or securely mounted can pass vibration to the cabinets around it and make normal sounds seem louder. Levelling, brackets, insulation and toe kick all appear in the makers' installation steps.

Placement matters as well. On its rushing water page, Whirlpool says how much sound you hear depends on the installation, and that a unit at the end of a cabinet run can be heard more than one boxed in between two cabinets.

How do you level a dishwasher to cut vibration?

Level a dishwasher by turning the front feet for side to side and the rear adjuster for front to back, with the weight on the legs and the cabinet square in its opening, as Samsung, Bosch and GE describe.

Samsung's levelling guide uses a level, a hex tool and a wrench, with the kickplate off. Rotating a front leg counterclockwise raises that side, and the rear screw, reached at the front of the base, sets front to back. Samsung also checks that the door frame is straight, about 22 inches wide at the cabinet screws.

Whirlpool's squeaking page wants the weight on the levelling legs and rear wheels, flat on the floor and square in the cabinet. ASKO asks for a firm floor and tightened lock nuts. GE's test: racks pulled halfway out should stay put, and the door should close without hitting the tub.

Should a dishwasher be fastened to the countertop?

Yes. Bosch, GE and Miele all fasten a built-in dishwasher to the countertop or the cabinets beside it, and Bosch warns that an unsecured dishwasher can tip forward when its door is opened.

Bosch's installation instructions use top brackets under wood countertops and side mount force distributors for granite, marble or solid surface, and for 18 inch openings. Its warning reads: "Do not use the dishwasher until it is completely installed."

GE's installation instructions screw the dishwasher to the countertop or to the adjacent cabinets, but never into the cabinet face frame. Miele allows built-under and integrated models only under a continuous countertop fixed to the cabinetry, with the dishwasher screwed to the cabinets as well.

Fastening also keeps the door clear of its neighbours. Bosch's SHE43DM5N manual says the closed door, its decor panel and attached parts "should not knock against adjacent cabinets or the worktop."

Does the insulation blanket or toe kick affect dishwasher noise?

Yes. GE's installation steps include a sound insulation piece on some models and a toe kick set firmly against the floor, and Samsung says the fabric around its tubs helps dampen sound and hold in heat.

GE tells installers to check that the tub insulation blanket is "smoothly wrapped around the tub", not bunched up or caught in the door springs, before the dishwasher goes into its final position. At the toe kick, GE's tip is: "Reduce sound from under the dishwasher. Make sure toekick is against floor."

Miele's sound emission test setup in the G 7000 instructions pushes supplied fleece strips under the base and sticks an insulating strip to the top edge of the toe kick, both depending on model. If your Miele came with those parts, they belong on the dishwasher, not in a drawer.

GE also flags the space underneath. To avoid service calls "for fill, drain or noise concerns", its instructions say to route the utility lines so they do not interfere with anything under or behind the dishwasher.

How do you make a dishwasher drain quieter?

Make a dishwasher drain quieter by keeping the drain hose free of kinks and set at the height its installation instructions give, and by clearing a clogged household drain. Some gurgle as the pump empties the tub is normal.

LG ties one drain sound to the house plumbing: a loud gulping, or a sink that drains slower than usual, means the drainpipe needs cleaning. LG adds that too much detergent, or food waste gathering in the drain, can cause a growling sound, and asks for only automatic dishwasher detergent in the amount the manual gives.

Kinks are the other common fault. Bosch warns that hoses can fold or kink while the dishwasher is pushed in, and GE's instructions say to make sure the drain hose "is not twisted or pinched." If you have an air gap at the sink, GE's owner's manual shows how to lift off the cover and clean it.

Does a dishwasher need a high loop or an air gap?

Yes, one or the other in most installations, and local codes may require an air gap. The makers set the heights to stop dirty water siphoning back, and none of them presents the loop as a noise fix.

MakerDrain hose rule in its instructions
BoschPart of the hose at least 33 inches off the floor, no higher than 43 inches
GEAir gap if the waste tee or disposer inlet is under 18 inches from the floor
WhirlpoolLoop at least 20 inches from the floor, or an air gap below that
ASKOInternal air gap and high loop built in; no part of the hose over 37 3/8 inches above the base

Whirlpool's drain loop page says to switch off the power before pulling the dishwasher out to look. Follow your own model's figures where they differ.

Does water pressure make a dishwasher louder?

Yes, according to LG, whose fill whistle grows louder when household water pressure is high. Bosch and Miele add that knocking in the water pipes comes from the home's plumbing, not from the dishwasher.

LG's fix for a high pitched whistle is "to adjust the tap opening to reduce the water volume supplied to the product." The makers give pressure ranges: Bosch's installation instructions set the top of the hot supply range at 145 psi, while GE's owner's manual and Frigidaire's use and care manual both give 20 to 120 psi.

For banging pipes, Miele's G 7000 instructions blame "the on-site installation or the cross-section of the piping", and suggest a qualified plumber if in doubt. Bosch's SHE43DM5N manual says the cause can be remedied only in the home installation, and its installation instructions want no sharp bends or kinks in the water line.

Can you soundproof a dishwasher?

No, not with anything a maker supplies after sale. Dishwasher sound insulation is built in at the factory, and the makers' advice is to keep those pieces whole and in place rather than add more.

GE lists what goes into the 52 dBA quiet package of its GPT145SSLSS portable: door insulation, mastic, a U-blanket outer wrap, a full metal case and a sealed toe kick. Frigidaire credits "extra, quality insulation" on its quieter models. Neither sells those as add-ons.

Covering vents is ruled out. ASKO's user manual warns that the ventilation opening in the lower part of the door "must not be blocked by a rug, carpet, or similar furnishing." If the insulation on your dishwasher is torn or missing, Samsung's advice is to check it is in good condition, and the original part comes from the maker.

How do you quiet a countertop or 18 inch dishwasher?

Quiet a countertop dishwasher by standing it on a level, flat counter and loading it so nothing hits the spray arm. An 18 inch built-in follows the same installation rules as a full size model.

Danby's DDW621WDB manual wants the unit "placed on a level, flat counter, near the water source." For noise inside the tub it lists a spray arm hitting an item, or an item fallen to the floor of the tub. Its end of cycle buzzer sounds for 8 seconds, and we found no setting in the manual to switch it off.

For 18 inch built-ins, Bosch's installation instructions call for its side mount force distributors in an 18 inch opening. Compact and countertop models in our table carry maker figures of 46 to 55 dB, louder as a group than full size built-ins.

When does a loud dishwasher need service?

A loud dishwasher needs service when the noise survives an empty cycle after cleaning and reloading, when grinding repeats every cycle, or when the maker names a pump fault. Samsung, LG and GE all draw the line there.

Samsung says to request service if the dishwasher is clean but the noise continues on an empty cycle, or if loud grinding happens every cycle on a model whose filter and pump opening cannot be reached. LG says squealing or grinding may point to a pump problem.

Bosch's SHV68T53UC manual asks owners to have the installation verified by qualified personnel for leaks traced to the water supply, drain, levelling or plumbing. Our guide to dishwasher noises covers which sounds the makers treat as faults.

How loud should a dishwasher be?

A built-in dishwasher should run at about its maker's rating, which in our table of maker figures falls between 38 and 62 dBA, with half the models at 45 dBA or lower.

Our dishwasher noise table lists 213 models with each maker's own wording. Bosch prints 38 dBA for the SHP9PCM5N and Frigidaire 62 dBA for the FDPC4221AS, and only a handful of makers say which program or test method their number describes. GE prints 47 dBA as the quiet package of the GDT650SYVFS.

Miele's figures are sound power, marked "re 1 pW" on data sheets such as the G 7766 SCVi, so they do not line up with plain dBA; sound power vs sound pressure explains why. Our decibel chart puts these numbers beside everyday sounds.

When is a quieter dishwasher the better fix?

A quieter dishwasher is the better fix when yours is loaded well, clean, level, fastened and fully insulated, yet its rated noise is still too much for an open kitchen or a flat with thin walls.

Some dishwashers are simply loud by design, and the published dBA is the figure to compare. Our ranking of the quietest dishwashers sorts models by their makers' figures, with separate guides for the quietest dishwashers under $800 and quietest panel-ready dishwashers.

Smaller kitchens have the quietest 18 inch dishwashers and the quietest countertop dishwashers. For a dishwasher in sight of the sofa, see planning a quiet open-plan kitchen.

Where do these dishwasher steps come from?

Every step comes from a dishwasher maker's own document: installation instructions from Bosch and GE, owner's manuals from GE, Bosch, Miele, ASKO, Frigidaire, Fisher & Paykel, Cove and Danby, and help pages from Whirlpool, Samsung and LG.

Quiet program figures come from the maker documents behind our dishwasher catalog. We did not load, level, fasten, insulate or re-plumb any dishwasher for this page, and we did not run a quiet program or a timer to hear the difference.

Beko's manual refused our automated requests, so Beko appears only through its product page. Samsung's installation guides were available only on retailer sites, which we do not cite, and KitchenAid and Maytag are covered through Whirlpool's help pages rather than separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add insulation to make my dishwasher quieter?

None of the makers we read recommends extra insulation from another source. GE ships sound insulation pieces with some models and Samsung says the fabric wrap on its dishwashers helps dampen sound, so if yours is torn or missing, ask the maker or its service network for the original part.

How do I turn off the beep on my GE dishwasher?

GE's owner's manual for its GD*640 to 670 and PD*705 to 795 series says to press the Dry Boost pad 5 times within 5 seconds to switch the control sounds on or off. On some models, 5 presses within 3 seconds toggle the double beep at the end of the cycle, and a triple beep confirms the change.

Is it better to run a dishwasher at night?

For noise, a delay timer lets the cycle run while you are out or asleep. GE delays the start by up to 8 to 12 hours depending on model, Bosch's SHV68T53UC by up to 24 hours, and Miele offers Start at and Finish at. Bosch says not to use Delay Start with liquid detergent.

Will levelling my dishwasher make it quieter?

Levelling can help when the cabinet sits crooked. Whirlpool says a unit that is not level or securely mounted can pass vibration into the surrounding cabinets. GE's check after levelling: racks pulled halfway out should stay put, and the door should close without hitting the side of the tub.

Why does my dishwasher drain make a gulping sound?

LG says a loud gulping sound, or a sink that drains slower than usual, means the drainpipe needs cleaning, and that too much detergent or gathered food waste can cause a growling sound. A short gurgle at the sink as the dishwasher pumps out is on Whirlpool's list of normal sounds.

Founder and editor

I founded QuietSpecs after running a product review blog, and I built it around the spec that is hardest to pin down. With noise, makers tend to quote the quietest setting they can find, or nothing at all. So I read the spec sheets, manuals and certification directories, quote each figure with the setting it describes, and say so plainly when a maker publishes none. I do not test products or measure decibels, and no brand pays for a place in a guide.
