Most of what decides how to make a dryer quieter sits outside the drum: four feet set level and short, a clean lint screen, a short metal vent run that the cabinet is not pressed against, and a load without loose shoes or metal. After that come the settings, from the end of cycle signal to the tumbling that follows it.
Every step here is taken from a dryer maker's own manual, installation sheet or support page, roughly from free to the ones that need a part. To put a name to a particular thump, squeal or scrape first, our guide to dryer noises sorts the sounds by when they happen.
How do you make a dryer quieter?
Make a dryer quieter by leveling it on short legs, cleaning the lint screen every load, keeping the vent short, metal and uncrushed, drying shoes on a rack, lowering or muting the signal, and switching off wrinkle guard tumbling.
In rough order of cost and effort:
- Clear the top and sides, and pull the cabinet clear of the vent and the wall.
- Level the dryer with the legs wound in as far as the floor allows.
- Clean the lint screen before or after every load.
- Check the vent run for crushing, kinks, lint and a stuck hood flap.
- Load it with zippers closed, pockets empty and no shoes loose in the drum.
- Turn the end of cycle signal down or off.
- Switch off wrinkle guard tumbling, or unload as soon as the cycle ends.
- On a ventless model, keep its air openings clear and try a quiet program if it has one.
- Fit a rack or basket for shoes, and replace foil or plastic venting with metal duct.
How do you level a dryer so it stops vibrating?
Level a dryer by checking it side to side and front to back with a level, turning the legs until it sits flat with all four feet down, and keeping every leg as short as possible.
GE's leveling page says "Leveling the dryer prevents the dryer from vibrating when in use," and that each leg adjusts about an inch. A GE gas dryer can have two extra anti-tip legs at the front inner corners, which GE says must touch the floor so the dryer cannot tip over.
Samsung's vibration page starts from zero: retract the feet completely, find the low corners with a carpenter's level, then turn only those. Its warning is the useful part: "If the legs are too long, the dryer may still vibrate, even if the top is level." Without a solid floor, it adds, "the dryer will not be stable."
The European compacts put it in noise terms. Bosch's WQB245AXUC manual says "In order to reduce noise and vibrations, align the appliance correctly," using a spirit level. Beko's HPD24412W manual says a level dryer runs "more silently and vibration-free," and says not to stand it on a long pile rug.
Why do the lint screen and vent matter for a quieter dryer?
The lint screen and vent set how freely air leaves a dryer. GE, Whirlpool and Bosch tie a clogged screen or vent to longer drying, and GE and Beko tie poor venting to fire risk.
None of the makers we read says in plain words that a blocked vent makes a dryer louder. They say it runs longer. GE's owner's manual says a dryer not vented to its specifications "will use more energy and run longer", and that "A partially clogged exhaust can lengthen the drying time." Longer drying is more minutes of drum and fan sound.
Bosch says a dirty lint screen "reduces the air flow in the appliance, extends the program duration, and increases energy consumption." Whirlpool's long dry times page asks for the screen to be cleaned after every use, and warns that fabric softener can leave a residue on it "that is typically not visible."
The fire warnings are blunt. GE's manual says "NEVER OPERATE THE DRYER WITHOUT ITS FILTER IN PLACE." Beko says flexible venting materials "are known to collapse, be easily crushed, and trap lint. These conditions will obstruct the clothes dryer's airflow and increase the risk of fire."
How often should you clean a dryer vent?
A dryer vent needs cleaning at least once a year, GE says, while Whirlpool gives every one to two years, or sooner whenever loads start taking longer to dry.
GE's steps are to unplug the dryer, disconnect the duct, vacuum it and reconnect it, with the inside of the dryer cleaned yearly "by qualified service personnel."
Whirlpool's Check Vent page gives a home test: after 5 to 10 minutes of running, hold a hand under the outside hood, and if the airflow is weaker than a hair dryer on high, clean the whole run. Some Whirlpool models flag AF or Check Vent on their own.
What dryer vent duct do makers allow?
Dryer makers allow 4 inch metal duct, rigid where possible. GE accepts rigid metal or UL listed flexible metal, Whirlpool calls foil or plastic not recommended, and GE and Beko rule out plastic.
GE asks for 4 inch rigid metal for the home exhaust duct, and rigid metal or a UL listed transition duct between dryer and wall. Its manual says "DO NOT use a plastic vent" and "Use the shortest length possible," and adds "Do not crush or collapse" the duct.
Whirlpool says foil and plastic "can easily collapse or be crushed," even by the dryer being pushed back. A diameter larger or smaller than 4 inches, Whirlpool says, will "reduce good air movement and cause longer drying times."
How long can a dryer vent be?
Maximum dryer vent length depends on the model and the number of 90 degree turns. One GE sheet allows 90 feet of straight 4 inch rigid duct on its standard full size dryers, and 35 feet with three turns.
These figures come from GE's GTV21ESSJ specification sheet, revised 4/15, for 4 inch rigid metal duct ending in a hood with a 4 inch opening:
| GE dryer group, as the sheet names it | No turns | 1 turn | 2 turns | 3 turns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0 to 8.3 cu. ft. models (GTDS, GFDS and others) | 90 ft | 60 ft | 45 ft | 35 ft |
| Long Vent 7.0 cu. ft. (GTD42, GTD45, GTD65, GTX42, GTX60) | 120 ft | 100 ft | 85 ft | 70 ft |
| Long Vent 6.0 to 8.0 cu. ft. (GTDL and GTV) | 150 ft | 135 ft | 125 ft | 115 ft |
| Frontload Long Vent 7.0 cu. ft. (GFDL) | 200 ft | 185 ft | 175 ft | 165 ft |
| 3.6 cu. ft. compacts (DSKS, DSKP) | 46 ft | 37 ft | 30 ft | 23 ft |
GE counts an exhaust out of the side or bottom as one more turn, ignores a turn of 45 degrees or less, and treats two 45 degree turns as one 90. Use the table printed for your own model; GE's manual says "DO NOT use duct longer than specified in the exhaust length table."
Whirlpool says runs longer than its chart "Shorten the life of the dryer" and lengthen drying.
Why does a dryer vent rattle or flap?
A dryer vent rattles when it is loose or touching something. Samsung says the vent must be secure and should not wiggle or rattle, so check how it is fastened and what it touches.
Samsung's noise page names the power cord as one thing it can knock on. Outside, GE's manual asks you to check with a mirror that the hood's inside flaps "move freely when operating," with no birds or insects nesting in the hood or duct. None of the makers we read discusses the sound a flap makes when the dryer is off.
How do you make drying shoes quieter?
Drying shoes quietly means keeping them off the drum floor. Whirlpool and GE offer racks that hold still while the drum turns, Bosch a wool basket for sports shoes, and Miele says loose shoes can tear the belt.
Whirlpool's rack page names tennis shoes as a rack item: "the drum continues to turn, but the rack remains stationary." It works with Timed Dry cycles only, and Whirlpool says to leave space between the items and the turning drum and never to remove the lint screen.
GE's rack hooks over the lint filter, needs the Timed Dry cycle, and must not share the drum with other clothes. A GE dryer sold without one can take part WE01X25160. Bosch lists its WMZ20600 wool basket for "woolen items, sports shoes, and soft toys."
Miele puts it most bluntly: "Placing shoes inside the drum for drying can cause the belt to tear, requiring a service call." Its manual says to use the Miele dryer basket, an optional accessory, whenever drying or airing shoes.
How do you stop zippers and coins banging in a dryer?
Zippers and coins bang less once pockets are emptied, fasteners are closed, and clothes with big buttons or zippers go in inside out. LG, Samsung and Bosch all ask for this before loading.
The fixes are free. Bosch's loading list asks you to "Close all zippers, hook and loop fasteners, hooks and eyes" and take off curtain fittings. GE adds a sorting rule: "do not dry a sheet with socks or other small items."
Load size counts as well. Samsung says excess weight can make a dryer "shift and vibrate", Whirlpool's wrinkle page asks for smaller loads "that can tumble freely," and Beko says drying performance degrades when the drum is overloaded.
How do you make a dryer buzzer quieter?
A dryer buzzer gets quieter once you lower the signal volume or switch it off, usually by holding one button for 3 seconds or using a Sound setting. GE, Whirlpool, Bosch and Miele offer volume steps.
Maker by maker, from their manuals and help pages:
- GE: press the Sound button until you reach the volume you want, or off.
- Whirlpool: hold Audio Level, or Reduce Static on some models, for about 3 seconds, then choose low, medium, high or off.
- Bosch WQB245AXUC: the end of program tone and the button tone each run from 0 (off) to 4.
- Miele TXR960WP: the Finish, Keypad and Welcome tones each take one of 7 levels, or off.
- Beko HPD24412W: press Sound Notification, before or after the program starts.
Whirlpool's tones page says a 3 second hold on its Audio button turns off "all tones" while the lights carry on. On GE dryers, Wrinkle Care repeats the signal "several times" during its tumbling.
Mid cycle beeps are a separate option: Whirlpool's Damp Beep comes on by default in its Bulky/Sheets cycle, while GE's Damp Alert beeps only when selected.
How do you make a Samsung dryer silent?
Hold the Drum Light or Super Speed button for 3 seconds on most Samsung dryers. Samsung says that mutes the completion chime and the power off sound, while button sounds stay on.
Samsung's chime page says a dryer whose manual gives no muting steps does not have the feature. Connected models may offer a Sounds switch or a volume slider in the SmartThings app, and Bespoke Combo units with a screen keep Sounds in the Settings menu.
How do you make an LG dryer silent?
Newer LG dryers set the end of cycle signal under Options, then Additional Settings, from a default of Very High down to Quiet/Off. Older models use one button, and the DLE6100W cannot mute at all.
LG's chime page lists the buttons by model:
- DLEX4200, DLGX4201, DLEX3850, DLGX3851, DLEX4500 and DLGX4501: press Signal.
- DLE3600 and DLG3601: hold Wrinkle Care for 3 seconds.
- DLE3400, DLE7000, DLE7100, DLG7101, DLE7150 and DLG7151: hold Dry Level for 3 seconds.
- DLHC1455: hold Less Time and Custom PGM together for 3 seconds.
- WashTower dryers: hold Reduce Static or Wrinkle Care for 3 seconds.
Can you turn off a dryer's wrinkle guard tumbling?
Yes, on every dryer we read that has it. GE's Wrinkle Care, Whirlpool's Wrinkle Shield or Wrinkle Prevent, Bosch's Wrinkle Block and Miele's Anti-crease are all options, and Miele ships with Anti-crease off.
The tumbling runs at intervals and for a while: an hour without heat on GE, 120 minutes on Bosch, and 1 or 2 hours on Miele, picked in its settings. Our noises guide explains why the drum keeps turning; the fix is to deselect the option, or unload when the signal sounds.
The trade is creases: GE asks you to unload promptly at the signal and hang garments up.
Is there a quiet cycle on a dryer?
Yes, on Beko's heat pump compacts. Beko's Silent program is the only one we found with a printed reduction: volume fifty percent lower than its wardrobe dry cottons program.
Beko's HPD24412W manual says that in Silent "the level of noise emitted to the environment will be the lowest", and "Volume level will be fifty percent lower" than the cottons program. Beko does not say how that was measured and prints no decibel figure for it.
The price is time. Beko's consumption table gives 220 minutes for an 18 lb Silent load, against 145 minutes for Cottons at the regular dry level. None of the other dryer documents we read lists a quiet program.
Should a heat pump or condenser dryer hum?
Yes. Bosch, Miele and Beko describe compressor hum, pumping or fans as normal on their ventless dryers. Our dryer noises guide covers those sounds; the step owners control is keeping the air openings clear.
Miele's manual says "The humming noises caused by the heat pump during the drying process are normal." Bosch asks you to keep the ventilation opening clear while the dryer runs, warning that it may otherwise overheat.
Miele says the cool air intake at the front "must not be blocked or covered", and Beko asks you not to block the air ducts in front of and under the dryer. Miele adds that a poorly ventilated room lengthens drying.
How do you make a washer dryer quieter?
Make a washer dryer combo quieter with the same load and leveling steps as a dryer, plus its signal setting where one exists. LG says some of its combos cannot mute at all.
LG names the WM3997HWA and WM3998HBA as combos whose melody cannot be lowered or switched off; its WM3488H mutes with a 3 second hold on Water Plus. Samsung's Bespoke Combo keeps volume in its Settings menu.
For a dryer stacked on a washer, the stacking kit advice is on our page about how to make a washing machine quieter.
What should you never do to quiet a dryer?
Never fit plastic venting, screen or boost the exhaust, vent indoors, run without the lint filter, or shut a dryer in a closet without the openings its maker asks for.
From the documents we read:
- Plastic: GE says "DO NOT use a plastic vent", and Beko rules out flexible plastic venting.
- Screens and fans: GE forbids a screen in or over the exhaust duct and a booster fan in it.
- Indoor venting: GE rules out exhausting into a wall, ceiling, attic, crawl space, chimney or kitchen exhaust.
- Lint filter: GE says never to run the dryer without it.
- Closets: GE's spec sheet asks for louvered or ventilated doors with 60 square inches of open area, or 120 with a washer.
- Repairs: GE's manual says not to repair or replace parts unless its user instructions recommend it.
For gas dryers, GE says "Installation and service must be performed by a qualified installer, service agency, or the gas supplier." The click and low roar of a working burner are on GE's normal sounds list, and the steps for a gas smell are in our dryer noises guide.
When does a noisy dryer need service?
A noisy dryer needs service when the sound survives an empty drum, a level cabinet and a clear vent, or is a scrape, a hot-only squeak, or a thump with nothing inside. GE says to stop using it.
GE's noise page says that if unusual noises continue after its checks, "discontinue use of the Dryer until it has been checked by a qualified servicer." Samsung sends a thump from an empty dryer to service, and Beko's manual says "Never try to repair a nonfunctional product yourself." LG's noise page calls thuds from heavy wet clothes normal.
How loud is a normal dryer?
A normal full size dryer has no maker noise figure: LG, Samsung, GE, Whirlpool and Maytag print none. Compacts that publish one sit between 61 and 67 dBA, with no distance or standard named.
From our dryer catalog, as each maker prints it: ASKO's T3HW product sheet gives 61 dB(A) for drying, and Bosch's WQB245B0UC sheet prints "Silence level 62 dBA", with 63 on its product page.
Higher up, Beko lists 66 dBA for the HPD24412W heat pump and 67 for the vented BDV7200X2, and Bosch prints 67 dBA for its WPA12100UC condensation dryer.
Only ASKO names the drying phase, and Beko's figures may be sound power; our sound power explainer and decibel chart put them in context.
When is a quieter dryer the better fix?
A quieter dryer is the better fix when a level, well vented, sensibly loaded dryer is still too loud for its room, or runs for hours in a closet beside a bedroom.
Some dryers are simply loud by design, and full size models give buyers no figure to compare. Our quietest dryers guide ranks what makers publish, the quietest compact dryers guide works through closet installs, and separate guides cover the quietest stackable washer and dryer pairs and washer dryer combos.
Where do these dryer steps come from?
Every step here comes from dryer makers' own documents: GE's owner's manual, spec sheet and support pages, Whirlpool and Samsung help pages, LG's help library, and manuals for the Bosch WQB245AXUC, Miele TXR960WP and Beko HPD24412W.
Nobody at QuietSpecs leveled, re-vented, racked, reloaded or muted a dryer while writing this, and we have run none of the signal settings, racks or vent changes above on a gas or electric dryer of our own. Speed Queen's dryer installation instructions and a full Electrolux dryer owner's guide were not reachable on the makers' own sites, so neither is used here.
